Harman and ordered placed on file. <br /> The Chief presented the 31st �nnua� Financial Sbatement of. the <br /> Firer�en's Pension Fund, �,hov,ing �activities of 1937 and the cash po- <br /> sition on January �1, 1938, which i�� ordered placed an file. <br /> ELECTRIC�.L UEPARTI�iE1VT - Mr. �,ua�Is present: <br /> Mr. �u�lls reparted that the v��arning si•gnuls at the Sr�mple and <br /> Fello���s Street crossing of the Ne�v Yor� Centr�l are too ex�ensive to <br /> operate electrically and recommended that fl��sh�rs be purchased Por <br /> saic� inst�llat�on. Instructions were gitren to communicate v,�ith the <br /> State Prison to see if they m�.nufacture a suitable flasher. <br /> PaLICE DEP�HTI�iENT - Chief Lan e present: <br /> The Chief presented a communication from the IndiGna Associa- <br /> tion of Chiefs of Police, outlining a plan for the installation of <br /> a Teletype���riter in the Folice Department. It was brought aut that <br /> a member of the State Police Department w�i�I be in South Bend Feb- <br /> ruary IDth to explain this matter. Defir_ite decision regarding the <br /> installation af the te�etypev�riter was therefore postponed. <br /> O��icer Ernest Busch made a report of an accident to Car Nu.21 <br /> as having come in cantact with a street car and Sample and I�ichigan <br /> Streets. A report was also presented from the driver of the street <br /> car. The Board instructed that the �fficers ir_ ear No. 21 be order- <br /> ed to appear before th� Board at its next meeting to discuss this <br /> matt er. <br /> City Tra£fic �ngineer i�iller made a report of a number o�' loce- <br /> tiQns v�here saPeguards v,ere neces:ary and after discussing this mat- <br /> ter, the report not being co�plete, the Board ordered that such safe- <br /> guard.s be erected as could be done v:�ithout purchase of v�arning signs. <br /> The Street Derartment therefore was ordered to erect barricades at <br /> Edgei^rater �nd T�onroe Streets, a.t Edge�tiater and Arch Avenue, �,.n.nd at <br /> Lafayetf;e and North Shore Drive; �nd to continue the present type of <br /> guard-rail 125 feet north and 50 feet south at Nile� Avenue and Cor- <br /> by; also to repair the guard-rail cable at the east end of Hydraulic <br /> Avenue bridge. Mr. �ualls was in�tructed to repair the dead-end elec- <br /> tric light at North Side Blt*d. and Notre Dame Avenue. Also to re- <br /> puir guard-rail along the river in the 13a0 block on Lincoln Way �as�. <br /> � The Board discussed the physical condition of Officers Fred Ham- <br /> ` mer and gave instructions to the Chief to have Offic�r Hammer bring <br /> in a report of his physical concition �nd recommendatxins by Dr. Paus- <br /> zek before he be permitted to go back to xork. <br /> A request �n�as received from �:estern Radio Service at �E35 Lincoln <br /> ti'�Tay West for the establi�hment of a loading zone in front of their � <br /> pl�ee of business. Having been referred to City Trafi'ie Fngin�er <br /> MilZer and he recommending tha.t this be not established for the rea- <br /> �on that there is a rear drive to the buildin� permitt� unloading <br /> in the rear, the Boa.rd concurred and ordered th&t the Ra�io Shop be <br /> so notii'ied. <br />
