The 2003 employment profile for St. Joseph County provides a good overview of the economic <br />make-up of this community. The median household effective buying income (disposable income after <br />taxes) in the County in 2000 was $40,420, which equated to more than $4.36 billion in effective <br />buying income for this area. <br />Health and education lead the employment statistics for St. Joseph County. The largest <br />employers in the County as of December 2003 were as follows: University of Notre Dame <br />(4,100); Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center (3,358); South Bend Community School <br />Corporation (3,000); Memorial Health Systems (3,300); Honeywell Incorporated (1,913); St. <br />Joseph County Government (1,631); Indiana University of South Bend (1,481); Martin's Super <br />Markets (1,435); City of South Bend (1,300); Meijer Incorporated (1,225); Penn-Harris-Madison <br />School Corporation (1,215); AM General Corporation (2,300); First Source Bank (969) and <br />Madison Center and Hospitals (815). <br />The following provides a profile of the adult population residing in St. Joseph County: <br />Gender: 48% male; 52% female <br />Age: 16.1% 18-24 years of age; 13% 25-34 years of age; 14.8% 35-44 <br />years of age; 13.1% 45-54 years of age; 7.8% 55-64 years of age; <br />and 13.6% 65 years or older <br />Race: 82.4% White; 11.5% Black/African American; 4.7% <br />Hispanic/Latino; 1 % Asian; and 1 % Other <br />Marital Status: 59% Married; 18% Widowed/Divorced/Separated; and 23% Single <br />Home Ownership: 78% own; 22% rent <br />Type of Dwelling: 84% single unit; 16% other <br />The cost of living continues to be one of the greatest advantages of living in this community. The <br />housing costs in South Bend are well below the national and regional averages. During the first <br />quarter of 2002, the median sales price for a single family home (per the National and Indiana <br />Association of Realtors) for the nation and the Midwest were $152,000 and $129,000, <br />respectively, compared to South Bend's median price of only $84,300.
