South Bend Redevelopment Commission
Regular Meeting — September 13, 2011
6. NEW BUSINESS (CONT.)
C. Airport Economic Development Area
(1) continued...
Mr. Downes asked what percentage of the
student body qualifies for free or reduced
lunch or special education. Mr. Hartz
responded that special education students
compose about 20% and 70% or 80% of the
students qualify for free and reduced lunch.
Both of those numbers are consistent with the
SBCSC.
Ms. King asked if the testing results of the
school's students will be published. Mr.
Hartz responded that they would, just as in
the rest of the SBCSC.
Mr. Varner asked if the same standards /rules
apply for this charter school as for SBCSC.
Mr. Hartz responded yes, that it is a public
school and will have to follow the rules
identically. The only difference is that we
both have to follow curriculum and this
charter school will have to follow curriculum
that meets its charter.
Mr. Varner questioned transportation
availability. Mr. Hartz explained that
transportation is the biggest difference
between the charter school and a normal
public school. The charter school has no
transportation funds. Transpo is helping the
students with a couple special buses in the
morning and afternoon. In other cases,
parents are dropping the students off.
Mr. Varner said that he is concerned about
more charter schools coming to the
Commission for funding.
18
