RESOLUTION NO. 1594 <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND <br />REDEVELOPMENT COMMISSION COMMENDING <br />PAULA N. AUBURN FOR EXTRAORDINARY SERVICE TO THE <br />SOUTH BEND REDEVELOPMENT COMMISSION <br />WHEREAS, Paula N. Auburn has been a member of the South Bend Redevelopment <br />Commission since January 1979, the longest tenure in Commission history; and <br />WHEREAS, during her nineteen years on the Commission Paula has attended more than four <br />hundred Commission meetings and devoted thousands of volunteer hours to the City of South Bend; and <br />WHEREAS, during her tenure on the Commission Paula has had an active role in projects such <br />as the 1st Source Center, the East Bank and East Race Waterway, Monroe Park, Teachers Credit Union, <br />One Michiana Square, the re- opening of Michigan Street, Coveleski Stadium, the Pointe at St. Joseph <br />Apartments, West Washington Homes, the Studebaker Corridor project, Central High School <br />Apartments, Stephenson Mill Apartments, Blackthorn Golf Course, Blackthorn Corporate Park, the <br />C-01 College Football Hall of Fame, Southeast Heritage Housing, the St. Joseph County Juvenile Justice <br />Center, the Boys and Girls Club at Family and Children's Center - Southeast, the new campus of Ivy <br />Tech State College, Robertson's Apartments, the Leighton Plaza project and the Morris Performing Arts <br />Center; and <br />WHEREAS, Paula always looked for a way to make projects happen in a way that benefitted <br />South Bend, using her skills in negotiation, give- and -take and compromise to balance the needs of the <br />community with the needs of the private developer in order to reach a "win -win" solution; and <br />WHEREAS, Paula unselfishly gave of her time for the betterment of the community with no <br />concern for individual honor or recognition although she played an instrumental role in setting policy and <br />negotiating through the details of many important projects; and <br />WHEREAS, during her tenure on the Commission Paula often had to make some difficult <br />decisions that were not popular with all segments of the community but which she felt were vital for <br />South Bend; and <br />WHEREAS, Paula has reviewed and given support to numerous urban plans and designs, <br />countless tax abatement petitions for expansion and attraction of business and has worked with Center <br />City Associates, the downtown business organization, in promoting and developing downtown South <br />Bend; and <br />WHEREAS, Paula worked with neighborhood groups on implementing plans for Monroe Park, <br />the West Washington Chapin Area and the Southeast and Rum Village neighborhoods; and <br />WHEREAS, Paula has never forgotten the public that she serves and has been committed to the <br />public process of decision making, recognizing its importance as necessary and beneficial to the decision <br />being made; and <br />WHEREAS, Paula has now decided to retire from her volunteer service on the Commission and <br />will now find other activities to pursue on the first and third Friday of each month; <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the South Bend Redevelopment Commission <br />hereby recognizes Paula N. Auburn for her extraordinary commitment and distinguished service to the <br />South Bend Redevelopment Commission and the City of South Bend; thanks her for the outstanding <br />contributions she has made; and declares it will sincerely miss her diligent work and her presence at <br />future meetings. <br />
