South Bend Redevelopment Commission
Regular Meeting —July 20, 2001
6. NEW BUSINESS (CONT.)
a. (Continued...)
MR. MASTERS (Continued...)
forward by this Commission for acquisition or
for development in the area.
I think that you could just leave us off the list
and should you ever get a plan, and think you
really need this building, then you could talk
about putting it on an active acquisition list.
But, for the time being, it serves no purpose to
put it on an acquisition list when you don't have
a plan to move forward to develop the area.
MR. HUNT: Not to be argumentative, however,
there is an extensive plan for development of the
former Studebaker /Oliver Plow Works. That
plan has been enacted and it is hopefully
moving forward. As a matter of fact, one piece
of property in that area has already been
acquired. Are there any other questions from
the Commissioners?
MRS. KOLATA: If I could just elaborate on
that. The plan you are referring to is the
Studebaker /Oliver Plow Redevelopment
Strategy that was adopted by the
Redevelopment Commission and also adopted
by the City Council. It calls for the acquisition
of all of that area, including where South Bend
Lathe is. It also includes the acquisition of
Oliver Plow Works. That plan addresses the
fact that we do indeed have a strategy for
acquisition of that property. The owners of
South Bend Lathe were involved in the
development of that strategy and have been
aware of that strategy.
13
