souk , BEND
AUGUST 201 1
 Mnypa.rrppFv f [prf.kr
Letter from the Mayor
Arts and culture shape us in many ways
Dear Friends and Neighbors,
A recent study indicated that arts organizations and activities have a$30.4 million annual economic impact in St.Joseph
County. On the average, each person attending an arts-related event in our community spends $26.41,not counting the
cost of event admission.Yet,we know the positive impact of arts and culture on our lives is immeasurable. The arts
inspire, soothe,provoke and connect us.
In South Bend, cultural and arts-related activities blossom into full bloom this time of year. Our new Chris Wilson
Outdoor Pavilion at Potawatomi Park is host to concerts from 7 to 8 p.m. each summer Sunday. But a special
ArtsEverywhere Performing Arts Series features free performances at 7 p.m. Saturdays through Aug.27,featuring
performers like the University of Notre Dame Shakespeare Festival's Young Company and the South Bend Symphony
Orchestra.
The South Bend Symphony's annual Pops at the Cove on Aug.23 will feature the 1812 Overture with a fireworks show,
while the annual Notre Dame Shakespeare Festival will present"The Merchant of Venice"Aug. 16-28 in the DeBartolo
Performing Arts Center on the Notre Dame campus.
More than 10,000 people in 2010 attended South Bend's largest arts event,Art Beat, which returns for its ninth year
from 11 a.m.to 6 p.m. Saturday,Aug. 27.An even bigger crowd is expected this year to stroll along our downtown
streets and sidewalks and explore the work of local visual, performing, and culinary artists.
The arts will continue to have a positive impact on our community. But they also will help our economy. The City of
South Bend is joining with the University of Notre Dame to transform the Hansel Center on West Washington Street into
the new Notre Dame Center for Arts and Culture. The facility also will house Notre Dame's Institute for Latino Studies.
Notre Dame is in the latter stages of securing sufficient resources for the project to move forward. In addition to
$930,000 from the City, the University, local philanthropic organizations and businesses have collectively donated or
pledged more than$1.5 million to the project. This reuse of the Hansel Center not only creates a focal point for
engagement by the University of Notre Dame with our African-American and Latino communities, but it also provides
an opportunity to help transform our West Side. The center will feature an internationally renowned fine-art print studio,
a literary program and writer-in-residence initiative, and significant community interaction through artistic programs,
workshops and events for children, adolescents and adults.
Located across the street from the Indiana University South Bend Civil Rights Heritage Center, this new initiative is
another great example of how partnerships with our universities and businesses are adding to the quality of life.
Sincerely, Visit Our Website at www SouthBendIN.gov!
Mayor Steve
14th Annual KeyBank Salmon Chase 10K Run/ 5K Run & Walk, Saturday, September 17 I
I rA~ Lace up your running shoes before the Notre Dame vs. Michigan State football game!
