South Bend Redevelopment Commission <br />Rescheduled Regular Meeting – June 22, 2007 <br />3. APPROVAL OF CLAIMS (CUNT.) <br />Upon a motion by Mr. King, seconded by Mr. Downes <br />and unanimously carried, the Commission approved the <br />Claims submitted June 22, 2007, and ordered cheeks to <br />be released. <br />4. COMMUNICATIONS <br />A. Communication from Anne Kolaczyk regarding <br />the Eddy Street Commons Development. <br />Mr. Inks noted that this C o r unl' eat]' M was <br />received, though it is not related to a current <br />agenda item. It expresses concems about the <br />density of the . d.dy St. project and the preservation <br />of the Notre Dame woods. It arrived by e -mail <br />June 13, 2007. Ed and Ai re Kolaczyk reside at <br />I I I E. Pokagon, <br />To: Members of the South Bend Plan Commission <br />As residents in the overall neighborhood affected <br />by the Eddy Street Commons development, we <br />were first excited by the ides of the college town <br />area and then appalled by it as the plans grew <br />from something charming to something totally out <br />proportion to the space available. It looks like <br />the decision makers believe if some is good, In <br />is better, and lots guaran tees finan ci a I success. <br />Freed always gu ran tees failure though. An over- <br />built rr will end up with empty storefronts, <br />empty apartments and condos, and unrented hotel <br />rooms—except onfootball weekends. <br />South Bend is not a densely built are, but one of <br />open space and tree-lined streets. The downtown <br />area certainly has many multi-storied buildings but <br />it's hard t find many over three stories anywhere <br />else in town. Instead, you see one and two story <br />homes and businesses and wide expanses of awn <br />and gardens.
