Dame's literary program, Letras Latinas, as well as space to host gatherings of minority writers, publishers, and editors from around the country. The Center will create opportunities that bridge cultural backgrounds; allow local artists to develop and expand their skills in a supportive, collaborative environment; collaborate with the South Bend Community School Corporation to develop, implement, and assess educational programs, activities, workshops, and events that enhance and expand learning for children, adolescents, and adult learners; and provide area residents with a variety of high quality, community based education, arts, and cultural programming. This Center will allow the Institute of Latino Studies and the University of Notre Dame to expand their presence in the community, while rehabilitating an historic property, and partnering with the broader Michiana area. Attached is a short history of the Hansel Center, which began its rich story as a children's dispensary. Also attached is a spreadsheet showing the Commission's funding for the project, and WWCDA available funds. To allow this exciting project to begin, additional funding is needed. With the Commission's participation, eleven (11) different funding sources will be utilized to rehabilitate the Hansel Center. Total project costs are estimated at $2.481 million. With the original Commission approved funds of $130,000 in CDBG and $370,000 in WWCDA funding, an additional $430,000 in WWCDA funding is requested. With total allocated funds of $930,000 by the Commission, the project can soon begin. In addition, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) is currently being drafted between the Redevelopment Commission, University of Notre Dame, and South Bend Heritage Foundation. It is requested that upon approval by Legal, Don Inks be authorized to sign this MOU. To recap, requested today is: • an additional $430,000 in WWCDA funding • upon Legal's approval of the MOU, Don Inks be authorized to sign on the Commission's behalf.
