South Bend Redevelopment Commission
Regular Meeting —May 24, 2011
landowners in downtown. It's a proposal to
make the window spaces available to local
artists or art organizations for a temporary
window gallery. These are being used both
in Chicago as part of Pop -up Art Week and
in Evanston as part of Art Under Glass.
Downtown South Bend would like to create a
visual continuum for people when walking
from point A to point B. DTSB will follow
the Art Under Glass model because what
works about that one is other than swapping
out a painting occasionally, there is no other
access to the space. They just get the
window. We talk about downtown being a
cultural arts destination, so we will start this
up by July and have it running through Art
Beat.
The lease contains a 14 -day notice to vacate
clause included so that if a lease - paying
tenant is found, we only need to give 14
days' notice. Evanston, Illinois has done this
for some time. We have all their paperwork,
a very simple lease which details the artist's
responsibilities. It's the artist's responsibility
to take care of installation. It generates
excitement and we hope it continues to shine
good light on the shops in downtown and
shows downtown as the place to locate if you
want to be around creative innovative
environment.
Mr. Varner asked if there are hard costs. Ms.
Nicholl -Smith responded that there are no
hard costs and DTSB will be working with
CB Richard Ellis to make the sign for the
window. One of the DTSB Board members
has offered to do the graphic design for the
artist's sign for free.
Mr. Downes asked if the program is
successful do we plan to do it beyond
15
