REGULAR MEETINGNOVEMBER 27, 2006 <br />There was no one present wishing to speak to the Council in favor of or in opposition to <br />this Resolution. <br />Mr. Jim Hart, Assistant Coach, St. Anthony/St. Joseph Football Team thanked the <br />Council for this honor, and introduced members of the team. <br />Councilmember Dieter made a motion to adopt this Resolution by acclamation. <br />Councilmember Varner seconded the motion which carried. <br />RESOLUTION NO. 3667-06 A RESOLUTION OF THE COMMON COUNCIL <br /> OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA, <br /> JOINING COMMUNITIES AROUND THE <br /> WORLD IN DECLARING DECEMBER 1, 2006, <br /> AS WORLD AIDS DAY <br />Whereas, the Common Council of the City of South Bend, Indiana, notes that on <br />December 1, 1988, World AIDS Day was introduced by the World Health Organization, <br />and that since that date it has been annually commemorated around the world in the <br />attempt to raise awareness of the global AIDS epidemic caused by the spread of HIV <br />infection; and <br />Accountability <br />Whereas, this year the theme of World Aids day is “” with people <br />looking back to learn from the past and looking forward to see how to plan and address <br />Stop AIDS, Keep the Promise <br />issues like universal access; with “” being the “tagline” for <br />organizations through 2010; and <br />Whereas, since 1991, the red ribbon has been an international symbol of AIDS <br />awareness with the “Red Ribbon Project” having its origin in the state of New York; and <br />Whereas, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provides <br />national leadership to help control the HIV epidemic by working with community, state, <br />national, and international partners in surveillance, research, prevention, and evaluation <br />activities; and <br />Whereas, the CDC estimates that over one million Americans are living with <br />HIV, and 24% to 27% of these people are unaware of their HIV infection; and <br />Whereas, during World AIDS Day 2006, countries throughout the world will be <br />focusing on achieving the following objectives: <br />Enhanced accountability from political leaders on their promises on AIDS. <br />Supporting a broad movement of civil society organizations campaigning to <br />develop their sense of joint identity and common purpose. <br />Generating a greater public awareness of, and engagement with, the problem of <br />AIDS worldwide. <br />Now, Therefore, be it resolved, by the Common Council of the City of South <br />Bend, Indiana, as follows: <br />Section I. On behalf of all of the citizens of the City of South Bend, Indiana, the <br />Common Council hereby declares Friday, December 1, 2006 as World AIDS Day in <br />South Bend, Indiana. <br />Section II. World AIDS Day is an opportunity for individuals throughout the <br />world to unite against the fight against HIV and AIDS so that the spread of HIV will be <br />stopped. <br />Section III . World AIDS Day is the perfect time and this is the season for <br />families, institutions of faith, and communities to come together with the spirit of <br />forgiveness. <br />9 <br /> <br />
