lul rg
tv
ti
►FACE
• 'A
r F ■
Office of the Mayor
NEWS RELEASE
Tuesday,August 22,2006
Contact: Mikki Dobski, Director of Communications& Special Projects, 235-5855
Tour de South Bend: the City to Host State Cycling Championship
The City of South Bend will be the site of the Indiana State Criterium Championship on
August 27. Elite cyclists from across the Midwest will be competing for prize money,
bragging rights, and the honor of being called the Indiana State Champion in cycling.
The race is sanctioned by the United States Cycling Federation (USCF),which is a
division of USA Cycling, the governing body for competitive cycling in the United
States.
The bicycle race, formerly known as the Rum Village Criterium, will be hosted by
Honeywell Cycling at Rum Village Park. "Our thanks to the City of South Bend's
Department of Public Works and Parks and Recreation for assisting with preparations of
the course," said Dave Beaverson, "Rum Village is a great location and a favorite of our
riders." Cyclists will compete in categories 5 through 1 according to their ranking, from
beginner to elite. Along with men's and women's divisions, the race will include a junior
division for kids and teens ages 10-17. One-day licenses may be purchased by local
riders who don't have a license, or may be new to cycling.
Registration will open at 9 am on Sunday,August 27, and the racing will begin at 10 am.
The feature race will take place at 2:15 pm. Local residents and other cycling fans are
encouraged to attend the race as the race course is very spectator friendly, and with racers
getting up to almost 30 miles per hour for their 75 minute ride, it should be a very
exciting race for spectators. The course is a .90 mile circuit with one gradual climb and
one steep descent. The road is clean and smooth, which will make for a fast yet safe race.
-more -
