Luecke, Mayor
RELEASE FROM: FOR RELEASE:
OFFICE OF MAYOR LUECKE TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 2005
Weed & Seed Billboards Feature Student Artwork
The South Bend Weed and Seed Alliance, Inc./Community Policing Committee has engaged area youth to
express their views on the power of positive peer pressure versus negative peer pressure through art as part of
Weed & Seed's community outreach initiative. Billboards, located throughout the Weed & Seed service area,
currently feature the artwork of students who placed in the top five of the Community Policing Committee's
second annual Billboard Design Contest with the theme, "Pressure Against Pressure."
The Community Policing Committee developed the contest to provide an opportunity for youth to address
challenging issues they face and to showcase their artistic talent. Youth in grades 8 - 12 who live or attend
church or school in the Weed and Seed service area, encompassing the St. Casimir, St. Adalbert and LaSalle
Park neighborhoods, were invited to participate in the contest.
The winning students in the Billboard Design Contest, announced in November, are from Washington High
School and include Ivy Garcia, 1st Place, Josie Weiler, 2nd Place, Hugo Garza, 3rd Place, Tim Tetzlaff, 4th
Place, and Ariel Curtis, 5th Place. Each student received a scholarship for art classes at the South Bend
Regional Museum of Art and a Hobby Lobby gift certificate to purchase art supplies.
For more information on the Weed and Seed Community Policing Committee and their efforts to
provide opportunities for residents living in the service area to get involved in efforts to strengthen
their community, contact Cindy DeLeon, Committee Co-Chair, at 245.6116 or Mark Dellinger, Weed &
Seed Coordinator, at 235.7619.
Back I City Home Page I City Directory I Site Map I Search Go
powered by FreeFind
Created by the City of South Bend Department of Information Technologies.
Copyright©2005 City of South Bend. All rights reserved.
http://www.ci.south-bend.in.us/Press/Releases 2005/020105 weedseed.htm 1/13/2006
