CITY OF SOUTH BEND SPRING LEAF PICKUP SERVICE BEGINS Page 1 of 3
 v%• 'Building a 21St Century City "
' rs Stephen J. Luecke, Mayor
RELEASE FROM: FOR RELEASE:
Stephen J. Luecke, Mayor Friday, April 8, 2005
CITY OF SOUTH BEND SPRING LEAF PICKUP SERVICE BEGINS
0
Operation Spring Releaf, a part of the City of South Bend's Clean City Initiative, will begin on Monday, April
11. The spring leaf pickup program will operate on a call-in basis. This leaf pickup program is specifically for
loose leaves. If you have LOOSE LEAVES raked to the curb, call the Bureau of Streets at 235-9244. If you
have BAGGED LEAVES placed at the curb, call the Bureau of Solid Waste at 277-8823 for pickup by Solid
Waste crews. (Please do not place bagged leaves in alleys.)
Last fall, the City picked up nearly 77,000 cubic yards of compacted leaves, the equivalent of a 3 foot high
stone wall, 18 inches thick and 87 miles long — nearly the distance from South Bend to Chicago! Most
importantly, all of these leaves were diverted from our landfill. The City's on-going investment in the leaf
pickup and yard waste programs also helps keep South Bend looking clean and attractive for our residents
and visitors.
Mayor Luecke encourages all residents to partner with the City to protect and conserve our environmental
resources. South Bend's yard waste is recycled at the City's Organic Resources Facility, thereby diverting
this material from our community's landfill and providing quality mulch for reuse. Residents can reap the
rewards of their efforts by going to Organic Resources to pick up high quality mulch and compost for free if
you self-load, or at a minimal sliding scale fee if you request assistance with loading. Organic Resources is
located at 4340 Trade Drive, off of Nimtz Parkway just '/4 mile west of Bendix Drive. Organic Resources is
open 8:00 AM to 3:45 PM, Monday through Friday. Please call 287-6841 for more information.
For more information on Spring Releaf, contact Sam Hensley, Superintendent of Streets, 235-9244.
For more information on Yard Waste Pickup, contact Jack Dillon, Director of Environmental
Services, 235-8515.
http://www.ci.south-bend.in.us/Press/Releases 2005/040805 SpringReLea£htm 1/13/2006
