South Bend Animal Control Takes Pro-Active Step to Reduce Cat Overpopulation Page 1 of 2
 v%• 'Building a 21St Century City "
' rs Stephen J. Luecke, Mayor
RELEASE FROM: FOR RELEASE:
Office of the Mayor Friday,April 29, 2005
South Bend Animal Control Takes Pro-Active Step to Reduce Cat Overpopulation
South Bend Animal Control and Pet Refuge will host the Neuter Scooter for the tenth time over the past year
and a half! More than 1,200 cats and 700 families in our community have been served through the low-cost
mobile clinic that will return to South Bend on Wednesday, May 18, 2005. Neuter Scooter provides
spay/neuter service and a 4-in-1 shot (including rabies) for just $40 in advance or $50 on the day of the
appointment.
Animal Control is pleased to partner with Pet Refuge to make the Neuter Scooter's return visit possible and
pro-actively combat cat overpopulation. Gary Libbey, Manager of South Bend Animal Control, noted that
there are not enough adoptive homes for all the kittens that are brought to the shelter each year. "During fair
weather months, people bring in a lot of kittens. Sometimes we'll get a couple litters dropped off in one day.
We hope that Neuter Scooter's services will help reduce the overpopulation of cats in our community."
Why is it important to spay or neuter your cat? Cats produce more offspring than available homes. An
unspayed female cat, her mate and all of their offspring, producing 2 litters per year, with 2.8 surviving
kittens per litter can total over 11 million cats in 9 years!
Pre-registration is required for Neuter Scooter and spaces fill quickly. Cat owners are encouraged to register
now in one of the following ways:
PRE-REGISTRATION & PAYMENT OPTIONS:
• Register and pay online at www.neuterscooter.com($40)
• Register online and pay (CASH ONLY) on the day of surgery at the Neuter Scooter site ($50)
• Call 1-866-MOBLVET (662-5838) to register and pay $40 in advance or $50 on the day of
surgery
Cats must be over 6 weeks of age to be spayed or neutered. Cats must be 3 months of age to be eligible for
the rabies shot. The location of the Neuter Scooter clinic and drop-off time will be given after an appointment
is made. Please bring cats to their appointment in a carrier with two clean towels.
For more information, call Gary Libbey, Mgr. of SB Animal Control at 235-9318 or 235-9303.
http://www.ci.south-bend.in.us/Press/Releases 2005/042905 NeuterScooter.htm 1/13/2006
