THE INTERNATIONAL MASONRY INSTITUTE HONORS LOCAL REDEVELOPM... Page 1 of 2
 v%• 'Building a 21St Century City "
' rs Stephen J. Luecke, Mayor
RELEASE FROM: FOR RELEASE:
Office of the Mayor Friday, May 20, 2005
THE INTERNATIONAL MASONRY INSTITUTE HONORS LOCAL REDEVELOPMENT
PROJECT WITH THE GOLDEN TROWEL AWARD
At its recent 2005 Golden Trowel Awards Banquet, at the Indiana Roof Ballroom in Indianapolis, the
International Masonry Institute recognized nineteen projects for their excellence in masonry design and
construction.
The Oliver Boilerhouse Renovation Project in South Bend was presented the Golden Trowel award for"Best
in Category: Restoration/Preservation-Exterior." Representatives of the project team were on hand to accept
the award. The organizations involved in the project were the City of South Bend, Rose Brick & Materials,
Inc., Ziolkowski Construction Co., ARSEE Engineers, Inc., Forum Architects, LLC, Harmon, Inc., and the
International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craft workers Local#4 IN/KY South Bend Chapter.
"The Golden Trowel Award symbolizes the heights we can reach when designers work with Team IMI to
create the best in masonry construction," stated IMI President Joan Calambokidis. A team of judges
representing architects, contractors, professors and craft workers made the selections in all of the trowel
trades, including brick and block, restoration, tile, marble and terrazzo, mosaic work and more.
The Oliver Boilerhouse Renovation Project began in late summer of 2003, and was completed in the spring
of 2004.
In less than a year, Rose Brick has experienced unprecedented sales in both the retail and wholesale
markets since their move to the Oliver Industrial Park. The boilerhouse and smokestack have become a
destination attraction for customers and visitors interested in both the business and the building. The City
plans to partner with other companies to develop the remaining lots in the Oliver Industrial Park.
The City and its partners in the Oliver Boilerhouse Renovation Project are honored and delighted to have
been chosen by the International Masonry Institute for this Golden Trowel Award. It is not often that a local
government has the opportunity to restore structures like the Oliver boilerhouse and smokestack to their
original luster and beauty. This award emphasizes the significant efforts made by the City and its project
partners to bring the Oliver boilerhouse back to life.
Contact: Andy Laurent, Project Manager, City of South Bend (574) 245-6112, or
Mikki Dobski, Director of Communications &Special Projects, 235-5855
Back I City Home Page I City Directory I Site Map I Search Go
powered by FreeFind
http://www.ci.south-bend.in.us/Press/Releases 2005/052005 Redev.htm 1/13/2006
