Historic Oliver School Bricks Are Cornerstone of Revitalization Activities Page 2 of 2
development on the site.
The 2002 Oliver School Site Reuse Plan recommends developing the site into a combination of residential
and institutional uses, which could include townhouses, single-family homes, apartments, and a community
center. The City is treating the plan as a guide for its preferred development concept and has been
aggressively marketing the site by distributing requests for proposals (RFP), advertising the sale on the
City's website, posting flyers at key locations, and on-site "for sale" signs. To date, the City has received a
number of inquiries and contacted nearly 80 individuals and companies interested in the site. "We have
been aggressively pursuing various local, regional, and national development opportunities to ensure that
the future site use and building design meet the needs of Rum Village residents and reflect its rich
neighborhood character', stated Mayor Luecke. "As soon as we receive viable proposals, we will move
forward with development of the site."
The sale of the former Oliver School property has been advertised through the City's formal bidding process,
with a minimum sale price of $38,250. Because federal funds were used to demolish the building, a
minimum of 51% of new development must be reserved for low-and moderate-income individuals. All
proposals will be subject to the review and approval of the Department of Community and Economic
Development regarding compliance with CDBG guidelines established by the Department of Housing and
Urban Development (HUD) and the review of the Historic Preservation Commission due to the historic
status of the site.
For further information, please contact Marco Mariani, Division of Community Development, 235-5844,
or Judith Elia, Coordinator, Rum Village Neighborhood Partnership Center, 245.6118.
Back I City Home Page I City Directory I Site Map I Search Go
powered by FreeFind
Created by the City of South Bend Department of Information Technologies.
Copyright©2005 City of South Bend. All rights reserved.
http://www.ci.south-bend.in.us/Press/Releases 2005/070805 OliverBricks.htm 1/13/2006
