South Bend's Automated Closed Container Program Rolls Towards Completion Page 1 of 2
 v%• 'Building a 21St Century City "
' rs Stephen J. Luecke, Mayor
RELEASE FROM: FOR RELEASE:
Office of the Mayor Friday, July 22, 2005
South Bend's Automated Closed Container Program Rolls Towards Completion
The City of South Bend expects to complete distribution of its new solid waste containers citywide, in the
next two to three weeks. To date, 22,000 containers have been delivered with approximately 8,000
remaining for distribution. Mayor Luecke thanks all residents of South Bend for their cooperation, patience,
and participation in the City's new solid waste collection program.
As a reminder, all new containers are delivered to the front curbside of the house; however, containers
should be stored in an appropriate location in the garage or near the house between collection days. On the
regularly scheduled day of pick-up, trash containers should be placed in the location where they have
always been picked up, either in the alley or at curbside. The arrow on the lid should point to the alley or
street. The container lids are to be tightly closed for pick-up, to avoid spillage and deter animals. Per the
new trash collection ordinance, bagged trash or trash in non-City containers will not be collected. Additional
bags or containers are not to be placed alongside the container, unless they contain yard waste.
The City is offering additional services for customers with special needs. If a customer applies for special
needs service, they must submit a letter from their doctor stating they are unable to roll out their container
for collection and a letter stating there is no one in the home to perform this task. If these conditions are met,
then the Solid Waste staff will perform this special service. This new service is effective August 1, 2005, in
accordance with a new Ordinance.
The new program is designed to
• Increase efficiency and minimize costs
• Encourage recycling and in turn reduce the amount of trash going into our landfill
• Create a cleaner, more attractive City by reducing trash and litter in neighborhoods.
According to Andre Price, Bureau of Solid Waste Superintendent, "the program has been going well and
crews are reporting that there are few or no extra bags on most of the collection routes". Residents have
been bagging and placing their debris in the containers, thereby accomplishing our goal of creating a
cleaner city and reducing litter in our neighborhoods."
Suggested options for reuse of old containers, include separating and placing yard waste in sturdy plastic
bags in the old container and label, or place additional recycled materials in the containers for pick-up on
weekly scheduled recycling days. Residents may call 277-8823 with any questions or concerns.
For more information, please call Jack Dillon, Director of Environmental Services, at 235-8515.
http://www.ci.south-bend.in.us/Press/Releases 2005/072205 trachContainers.htm 1/13/2006
