Luecke, Mayor
RELEASE FROM: FOR RELEASE:
Office of the Mayor Friday,August 26, 2005
New Solid Waste Container Program Up and Rolling!
The City of South Bend is pleased to report that the rollout of the new solid waste container program is
nearly 100% complete. At this time, Environmental Services' Bureau of Solid Waste is reminding residents
of the new procedures and helping residents to work out the wrinkles of the new program. "The Bureau of
Solid Waste is using lime green information hangers on containers to advise residents of issues that may
need to be addressed in order to receive continued quality service," stated Andre Price, Superintendent of
Solid Waste.
The Bureau is also identifying homes where the solid waste refuse exceeds the volume of the container and
results in the inability to properly close the lid. In accordance with the new ordinance, the resident will be
sent a letter suggesting they obtain another container, or recycle their items to allow for closure of the lid.
Price also noted that "the City of South Bend offers a once a month Free Large Item Pickup for one item,
such as an appliance, furniture, or similar." Residents should call 277-8823 to schedule a special pickup.
Unfortunately, there have also been reports of containers being stolen from homes and then sold for a
sizeable fee to residents who need an additional container. Households will be monitored for the number of
containers being used and billed accordingly.
Under the new container program, the City is also offering additional services for customers with special
needs who are unable to roll out their own containers. If a customer applies for special needs service, they
must submit a letter from their doctor stating they are unable to roll out their container for collection and a
letter stating there is no one in the home to perform this task. If these conditions are met, then the Solid
Waste staff will perform this special service.
Beginning Friday, September 16, 2005, old solid waste containers will be picked up by the Bureau of Solid
Waste. Old containers should be placed in the same location, curbside or in the alley, as followed for regular
http://www.ci.south-bend.in.us/Press/Releases 2005/082505 container.htm 1/13/2006
