CITY OF SOUTH BEND ; OFFICE OF THE CLERK
Committee Chair White turned the floor back to Committee and Council Members for closing
comments.
Committeemember Voorde stated, There is obviously more work to be done.
Committeemember Williams-Preston stated, I'm looking forward to looking forward. Let's get
some hammers swinging in this neighborhood this summer.
Committeemember Broden stated, We really do lack a plan on housing that everyone is aware of
and we need to be strategic about it. If we don't have a plan as a starting point,we don't have much
as a City because from there comes everything else. We have to do a better job figuring that out
collectively. The dollars will always be shorter than our dreams but how do we get there together?
We need to have our priorities clear in our budget. I have a long list of follow-up and I really
appreciate the opportunity to come tonight.
Councilmember Scott stated, Thank you all for coming tonight and to the last Council meeting. It
is follow-up and we will be sure to continue this. Thank you Alkeyna, Antonius and Ed for being
here from the City. The Department of Economic Engagement and Empowerment is just starting
and is a result of us pushing for it for a few years now. We have to continue the momentum. It is
all interconnected and we will continue doing our part to advocate. We have five (5) Council
Members here and you have a strong voice.
Mr. Jones stated, Thank you for coming.
Ms. Aldridge stated, Antonius and I pinch ourselves every day that we are in the positions we are
in. Our passion comes from people like you so, please, continue to push us. I grew up in LaSalle
Park, he grew up in the South East side where there are no parks at all and we are here. We are
here because we care and we know the issue. You have advocates on the 14'h floor of the County-
City Building that come with the same exact concerns and experiences you have.
Committee Chair White stated, I ask the LaSalle Park Neighborhood Alliance members to please
submit any questions or comments to your president and I ask Council Members to please submit
theirs to the Clerk's Office and they will put all of this together and will come back to you and the
full Council. We need a list of all the different initiatives and programs to see how they support
each other. We talked about what information is needed and the need to be strategically focused.
I am looking at those five (5) priorities and my goal is to come out of all of our meetings with a
strategic plan. I also heard the issue of relationships. We are all in this together but what does that
mean and what does that look like? We need to have some serious conversations about that as we
move forward. I also heard you need to be at the table when they discuss the programming and the
planning for the Charles Black Center. Those are some of the things I heard and we will put it all
together and get it back to you. I appreciate the work you all have done and it certainly didn't
happen over-night.We have an aging housing stock and it will take programs and dollars to address
this issue. There is a level of commitment to Quality of Life on the Council. Feel free to call any
of us and we will schedule another time for another meeting. I encourage you to meet again and
ask yourselves what the measurable outcomes will be.
A LaSalle Park Neighborhood Alliance member closed the meeting in prayer.
EXCELLENCE I ACCOUNTABILITY I INNOVATION I INCLUSION I EMPOWERMENT
455 County-City Building I 227W.Jefferson Bvld South Bend,Indiana 46601Ip574.235.9221If574.235.9173!TfD574.235.5567iwww.southbendin.gov
12
