Subject: parking 2
from: Maria Wolf (mikewhiskey@prodigy.net)
To: mikewhiskey@prodigy.net;
Date: Sunday, May 6, 2018 8:02 PM
Request for "residential only permit parking" along Greenlawn Ave. on school days.
A significant increase in student parking has recently occurred along S. Greenlawn Ave. This issue is
particularly pronounced between Hoover and Wall St. Both IUSB and John Adams High School
students have availed themselves to this parking.
This student parking swells to a peak of 25 cars during most school days. As 'word gets out, I predict
this figure will only continue to climb.
This situation is not only an inconvenience for tax -paying homeowners, but it has also proven to be a
safety issue as well.
1. As the homeowner at 737 S. Greenlawn Ave., there is no parking for visitors available that is
convenient to my front door. Furthermore, this also presents problems for the UPS driver, FedEx
delivery person, and the USPS mail person.
2. Exiting Hoover and turning north or south onto Greenlawn is particularly hazardous. Automobiles
are parked up and down the street - in fact, up to the very intersection itself-, making it difficult to see
if it is safe to proceed.
3. The high school students have an abundance of empty spaces in their student only parking lot.
However, they park on Greenlawn Ave. so as not have to wait to exit their own lot. Consequently,
multiple vehicles are leaving the street parking simultaneously in addition to the traffic already going
north and southbound..
4. The student parking prevents a street sweeper or snowplows from effectively cleaning the street.
The parking commences at 7:15 A.M. Monday -Friday and does not'clear out till 3-5 P.M.. The only
storm drain on the Greenlawn Ave block is in front of my dwelling. It was totally clogged (think large
lake) with leaves, twigs, small branches and assorted trash and street debris during Oast rainfall.
5. There is student permit parking available on both John Adams and IUSB campuses.
..d: -Other areas around John Adams H.S. and IUSB have "residential permit parking. These streets
include Twyckenham Dr. , Wall St., Chester, and Bellevue Ave., South Esther St, Ruskin St. and
Mishawaka Ave. In fact, Greenlawn is the only street that does not have any posted signage for
"residential permit parking only during school days".
7. This situation decreases property values in the area. Litter has increased substantially and has
become something to be dealt with daily.
8. There are a number of families with young children under 10 who live on both Hoover and
Greenlawn Ave. The John Adams and IUSB students, who are relatively inexperienced drivers, drive
much too fast and too recklessly for posted speed limits in the area putting the young residents in
peril.
This is a situation that needs immediate attention before there is an accident, injury, or worse.
