MEETING September 9, 1935 <br />Regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held at 9:00 <br />A. M. <br />Monday, September 9, 1935. All members were present. <br />Minutes of meeting of September 3rd were read and approved. <br />Requisitions bearing numbers 08614 to 08629, inclusive, were approved. <br />Claims in the amount of 4593.84 were allowed and ordered paid, also <br />payroll <br />for the first half of September amounting to $16,815.73. <br />Underwood 'Elliott Fibh6r_'_'Co..` South Bend Electric Co. <br />479.44 <br />Krauss - Jeweler .75 Ind. & Mich. Meyer & Son, Inc. <br />.35 <br />FIRE DEPARTMENT - Chief Freeh present: <br />Matters pertaining to his department were discussed and, as there were <br />no matters of importance, no action was taken. <br />The Chief made a report that truck No. 2, located at Thomas and Walnut <br />Streets, was struck by a light delivery truck while responding to a fire <br />north on Walnut Street. The damage to the apparatus was approximately <br />four dollars and repairs were made in the Fire Department. No action was <br />taken in reference to this case and the report was ordered placed on file. <br />ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT - Mr. quails present: <br />Matters pertaining to his department were discussed, but as nothing of <br />importance was brought up no action was taken. <br />POLICE DEPARTMENT - Chief Lane present: <br />Matters pertaining to recent request of the Mayor regarding gambling <br />devices were discussed. <br />A letter from Mandel Altfeld, 527 South William Street, calling <br />attention to pin machines which ' have been in use in the City for some time <br />were not strictly gambling. The Board discussed this thoroughly with the <br />Chief and he was instructed to bring Mr. Altfeld in for a conference and <br />inform him that these pin machines will be tolerated until it is found <br />that technical gambling results. <br />The Chief was instructed to call in Louis Curl, operating the Lincoln <br />Hotel, to inform him that the Administration expects him to keep his <br />gambling operations closed.' <br />The Board discussed with the Chief recent damage to Police cars and <br />instructed him to have officers Tholander 'and Rzepka, who had accident <br />with Car No. 3 recently, and Frank Ferger, who brought in Car No. 11 a <br />few days ago with rear axle and drive shaft torn out, present at the next <br />Board meeting on Monday, September 16th to explain these accidents. <br />A communication was received from three business houses, namely: <br />the Linen Shop - log West Colfax, Madden Corset Shop - ill West Colfax, <br />and Margaret & Louise Millinery - 113 West Colfax, stating that they were <br />informed certain taxi cab owners were planning to obtain permission to <br />establish their taxi cab stands in front of their respective places and <br />,,they wished to enter protest against this being allowed. There having <br />been no requests of this nature, the Board ordered their communication <br />placed on file. - <br />Mr. J. W. Bonner, operating the Clothes Mart at 303 South Franklin <br />Street, requested the Board to establish a one-hour parking limit in <br />front of their place of business, which after considering the Board <br />decided not to allow. <br />Mrs. Alice Vernal of 2501 West Orange Street presented a claim <br />against the City for 45.00 damage caused by Policeman who shot through <br />her house in apprehending two escaping burglars on August 30, 1935. <br />11 <br />I I <br />I I <br />
