MEETING . ?uly - -22, 1935 <br />Regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held Monday, July 22, <br />1935 at 9:00 A. M. All members were present.,. <br />Minutes of meeting of July 15th were read and approved. <br />Requisitions bearin numbers 08.567 to 08577, inclusive,.were approved. <br />Claims in the amount of 1573.90, from the following suppliers, were approved <br />and ordered paid, also payroll of the Fire Department amounting to 490386.66 <br />was approved. <br />Electric Construction Co. $27.00 Amer. Carroll Brown 2.04 <br />Representatives of the Hospitals appeared before the Board in-response <br />to a,.letter directed to them with reference to their, claims agaimst,the <br />City of South Bend for services rendered City employees who are injured in <br />the line of duty, there having been some understanding that the Hospitals <br />were -to render this service gratis, due to their participation in the tax <br />levy which at the: present time is on the basis of, three cents. The presen- <br />tation of their views in the matter was offered by Drs. Sensenich,-Bertling <br />and Clark and Mr. Vitus Jones. The discussion was entirely from a sta_nd.- . <br />point of determining the extent of the responsibility, if any, of the: <br />Hospitals in'connection with this work. After listening to their views, <br />the Board invited them to meet with the Common Council the evening of <br />Monday, July 22nd,.at which time an Ordinance was to be introduced to be <br />used in paying these claims, if correct. <br />Sheriff Roy Wolfe was present to discuss with the Board and Chief of <br />Police Lane the matter of ambulance service outside the City Limits. After <br />a full discussion of the .matter, it was decided that the Sheriff would not <br />call upon the City for service excepting in cases of emergency where he <br />could not secure services of independent ambulance owners and.in such <br />emergencies the Police Department would respond to his request.' <br />_ POLICE DEPARTMENT— Chief.Lane present: <br />The Chief reported on a trip to the Convention at Atlantic City from <br />which he has just returned stated that on his way to Atlantic.City he <br />stopped at all important cities and discussed with the Chiefs of Police or <br />other officials the various phases of police work and exchanged ideas with <br />them along this line. The Chief also reported on some of the activities <br />of the Convention but was interrupted by a call from the Mayor who asked <br />for a personal conference with him -and Chief Lane's report was deferred <br />until a later meeting. - <br />Communication from the Mayor was received calling attention.to a <br />motor boat which.is the property of the City of South Bend and is now <br />stored in the boathouse at Leeper Park. He recommended that mechanics put <br />this boat in running odder and that the Board of Public Safety advertise <br />it for sale. The Secretary was instructed to investigate the cost of doing <br />this work and to report at the next meeting. <br />Applications for Police Department were received from the following <br />and ordered placed on file: Grifford Ecklund, Bernard V. Strike, Cleon C. <br />Fox and Lawrence R. Stein, colored. <br />FIRE DEPARTMENT - Chief Freeh present: <br />Matters pertaining to the Fire Department were discussed, but owing to <br />the fact that no matters of importance were brought up, no action was taken." <br />ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT - Mr. Qualls present: <br />Mr. Qualls presented his June report of fire alarms handled in compar- <br />ison with activities of.previous months and years. This report is on file - <br />in the office of the Board of Public. Safety. <br />Responding to the Board's request at the last meeting to make a report <br />` <br />of the expense of changing overhead stoplight at Cushing Street and Lincoln <br />Way West to the same system installed recently at Lincoln Way West and <br />William`Street, Mr. Qualls advised that the cost of this change would.be <br />approximately 420.00, much less,than the former change, in view of the fact <br />
