Budd, President, at 9 -15 A. 1 <br />POLICE DEPARTIENT <br />1 <br />Following a telephone call, Dr. P J. Haley, Deputy Coroner, appErred. be- <br />fore the Bo ^rd of Safety ark explained that in response to the telephone call <br />of the President of the Board, he had been 'Unable to respond sihee he as <br />c onf ined in the IL <br />a yo Clinic at Rochester, Minn. I� , and that this was his first <br />opportunity to respond. When questioned by Ivir. G with reference to <br />the conversation of Chief' of Pollee John B. Kuespert and M 71. R. Hinkle <br />the night of T.I y 27 tT- . , 1933, Dr. Epley sa id: "I was in the Detective <br />Bureau that night and was busily engaged in the questioning of a suspect that <br />was brought there by the police following the fatal shooting of Officer <br />Thompson.` I was talking to this man and any conversation over the telephone <br />in the bureau at that time did. not detract from mfr line of questioning. I <br />was unable to say what took pla ce at that time in the Detective Bureau other <br />than the conversation I had with the of f'ic ers and the suspect tat I was <br />questioning. In the rood at' the' ti:`?s.a number of officers and newspaper <br />men, but my attention <<Tas directed. to the suspect." <br />Mr. F rost then said to Dr. H "Vas John Kuespert drunk ?" Dr. H <br />said: "No, he was not, but he eppepred to he much shaken up and perturbed <br />over the tragedy." <br />Acting Chief of Police, Horace H reported that he h.as been checking <br />up on City Licenses and that a number have reported to the City Controller <br />to secure the necessary papers. he also reported the activities of the <br />Department for the past week. <br />FIRE DI'l"PARTY71 NT <br />Motion prevailed that all bids for coal be cancelled at th -s time and <br />Fire Chief Roy Knoblock was unformed by the Board that the Mayor had sent <br />a letter objecting to one paragraph in the advertisement in which it was <br />stated. that prospective bidders might have to accept tax anticipation <br />warrants for part payment. In vietiFT of the letter, the motion of ITr. Gadacz <br />and a second by I:1r. Trost, passed to hold up the math. This prevailing <br />motion will hold until the City ` gives an opinion as to how to <br />advertise for said bic? s . <br />V , ` ELECTRICAL DEPARTIEENT <br />W illiam F. Qualls, Superintendent of the Department, reported the activit- <br />ies of the department for the past week. <br />Michael Barany reported th«t Receipt No.5786 in the amount of `;30.00 had <br />been received from the Building Department for the removal of certain lines <br />in the Citv of South Bend, Indiana. <br />WEIGHTS AND MEASURES <br />Lotion prevailed to place on file the report of Charles Burns, City Sealer. <br />, -- Yeeti ng adjourned at 11 -30 A.
