several mass arrests for blocking access at the previous abortion clinic, locking themselves into the clinic, and <br /> spraying butyric acid into the building. <br /> If history gives any indication of local anti-abortion protests, granting this rezoning would be a disastrous <br /> safety issue for the WWHA clinic, the City of South Bend, our whole community and would be a complete <br /> strain on the South Bend Police Department and other first responders. <br /> We can personally testify that providing clinic defense in the late 80's and early 90's was extremely dangerous, <br /> even with police protection. At one point, clinic defense volunteers linked arms to surround the building <br /> when outside agitators were protesting at the property line. There have been incidents of nationwide anti- <br /> abortion protests getting more violent, including fatal shootings by extremists. <br /> For these reasons, we totally oppose the rezoning request and urge that you do the same.
