Lvrrckc V
Letter from the Mayor
Dear Friends and Neighbors,
Amid a season of global economic turmoil, it's easy to feel as though there
is no good news. With prominent media reports of layoffs and plant closings
on a regular basis, sometimes positive developments can get lost.
In 2008, precisely as the nation fell into recession, two international
companies chose to align their futures with South Bend. They selected our
city over other competitors as the place to locate corporate management
functions. Fortis Plastics LLC and Heraeus Kulzer Inc. have joined
prominent companies like AM General and Crowe Horwath with a
headquarters in South Bend.
Heraeus Kulzer Inc., a maker and distributor of dental products, relocated its
North American corporate headquarters to South Bend in April 2008. Since
1989, the company has had a presence in South Bend, employing 61
full -time staff in a facility on South Lafayette Boulevard. But the company
added 35 new, permanent positions. Heraeus Kulzer undertook a $1.8-
million expansion of its existing 25,000- square -foot facility to accommodate
the firm's administrative and managerial staff. The 9.4 -acre site, just south
of the Showplace 16 Cinemas, will front the redesigned South Main Street
extension when the road improvement is completed.
Late in 2008 and early in 2009, Fortis Plastics LLC made separate an-
nouncements to focus its corporate management functions in South Bend
and consolidate operations from two plants in a facility near the airport
along Voorde Drive. Fortis Plastics is a diversified custom molding supplier
for the appliance, furniture, building products, industrial, automotive and
medical device industries. The move will bring as many as 184 new
manufacturing and corporate- management jobs to the city by 2013. In
addition, the company is renovating its facility and investing $2.22 million
in new equipment.
In both cases, the City of South Bend worked closely with the State of
Indiana to help secure these jobs. Incentives like the Metronet, a lightning -
fast 50 -mile network of dark fiber optic cable, help make South Bend
competitive with much larger cities.
We are proud to be a community of choice for these good corporate citizens
Their investment in South Bend highlights the importance of public support
as a means to attract economic development. As we attract companies like
these, South Bend can become key driver in powering a new economy with
sustainable development and clean, good - paying jobs for our residents.
Sincerely,
Mayor Steve
THIS MONTH...
Mayor's Letter Fireworks Safety
TCU Kids Triathlon Enshrinement Festival
Summer Concert Series
• Swim 6iKa `'!z -u.y •
• 7,5 yard 1.3 miLr;s f mile
•
TCU 9th Annual Kids
• Triathlon •
• The City of South Bend Parks and •
Recreation Department will present the
• TCU KIDS' TRIATHLON on Sat., July •
25, 2009, at Potawatomi Park!
