REGULAR MEETING <br />JANUARY 22, 2007 <br />RESOLUTION NO. 3683-07 A RESOLUTION OF THE COMMON <br />COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTH <br />BEND, INDIANA, PUBLICLY <br />COMMENDING THE SOUTH BEND <br />TRIBUNE FOR BEING NAMED THE <br />BEST DAILY NEWSPAPER IN THE <br />STATE OF INDIANA BY THE HOOSIER <br />STATE PRESS ASSOCIATION <br />Whereas, the Common Council of the City of South Bend, Indiana, notes that the <br />Hoosier State Press Association was founded in 1933 and represents Indiana's daily and <br />non-daily newspapers which are published at least once per week with a general, paid <br />circulation with the Association being dedicated "to protecting and empowering the great <br />tradition of newspapering in Indiana" ;and <br />Whereas, in December of 2006, the Hoosier State Press Association (HSPA) <br />awarded lgt Place to the South Bend Tribune in their "Blue Ribbon Daily Newspaper of <br />the Year" contest and was named the "best daily newspaper in the State of Indiana"; and <br />Whereas, the HSPA judges noted that they were "impressed by the [South Bend <br />Tribune's] commitment to the reader... that their paper is easy to navigate and it's <br />obvious the reporters who walk the beats know their community" citing the Tribune's <br />strengths as covering local stories, law enforcement coverage, sports; and "one of the <br />strongest local arts coverage" with the South Bend Tribune competing against daily <br />newspapers with a circulation greater than 40,000; and <br />Whereas, the Common Council is also proud to recognize Staff Writer David <br />Rumbach who won lgt place in the category of "Best In-Depth Feature or Feature <br />Package"; Graphic Editor John Stump who won 2nd place in the category of "Best Use of <br />Graphics"; Staff Writer Patrick M O'Connell who won 2nd place in the category of <br />"Community Service"; Photographer Santiago Flores who won 3~d place honors in the <br />category of "Best Feature Photo"; Tribune staffers who won lgt place in the category of <br />"Best Editorial Page and Best Business Section or Pages" and who also won 2nd and 3~d <br />place honors in the categories of "Headline Writing and `Best Feature Section or Pages"; <br />former Staff Writer Carol Elliott who won 3~d place honors in the category of `Best <br />Business/Economic News Coverage"; with the South Bend Tribune finishing 3~d in the <br />"General Excellence" category. <br />Whereas, the South Bend Common Council recalls that last year several South <br />Bend Tribune journalists earned eight (8) 1 sc place awards, three (3) 2nd place awards and <br />two (2) 3~d place awards for their work in the "2004 Best in Indiana Journalism" by the <br />Indiana Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, the nation's largest not-for- <br />profit journalism organization with over 13,500 members. <br />Now, Therefore, be it resolved, by the Common Council of the City of South <br />Bend, Indiana, as follows: <br />Section L On behalf of all of the citizens of the City of South Bend, Indiana, the <br />Common Council hereby congratulates the South Bend Tribune and all of the award <br />recipients of the South Bend Tribune for bringing the highest of honors to themselves, <br />their family, friends & colleagues, the South Bend Tribune and all of the residents of the <br />City of South Bend, Indiana, for being recognized as best daily newspaper in the State of <br />Indiana by the Hoosier State Press Association. <br />Section II . This Resolution shall be in full force and effect from and after its <br />adoption by the Council and approval by the Mayor. <br />s/Derek D.
