REGULAR MEETING
COMPLAINT - SEWER FAILURE ON CLEARVIEW PLACE
359
JANUARY 8. 1979
Jean Gundeck, 725 Clearview Place, was present and advised the
Board of a recurring problem with sewer failure near her
property. Mrs Gundeck noted she had problems a year ago when
water backed up in her basement, causing damage to carpeting and
furnishings and an extensive clean -up. At that time, Mrs.
Gundeck said she was told by workmen that the repair being made
should extend beyond the area of the failure or it would recur.
She noted she has now completed a $20,000 remodeling job on her
home, with new carpeting and furniture in the family room. Last
week, the sewer problem recurred and she had water and sewage back
up. Water Works employees came and pumped the basement out and
she spent considerable time and expense attempting to clean the
area. This week -end the same problem recurred again. She said
she contacted Morgan Peck on Sunday and workmen are at the scene
today. Mrs. Gundeck noted extensive damage to carpeting and
furnishings, some of which are antiques, and a considerable amount
of time spent in attempting the clean -up. She said that, as a
taxpayer, she should not have to put up with this situation. The
problem should be corrected now and the work done completely.
She said she was told by one workman that the problem is caused
because the sewer is concrete and is failing. Mr. McMahon agreed
that Mrs. Gundeck had a valid complaint. He said the City is
aware of problems in the area and will have to make a determination
as to what kind of permanent repairs need to be made: He recommended
that Mrs. Gundeck file a claim with the City for damages to furnishings
and for time spent in clean -up. Mrs. Gundeck was advised that the
claim should be submitted to the City Attorney's Office. John
Stancati, Director of Utilities, was present and said he had discussed
the matter with Morgan Peck and was aware that a crew is at the site
this morning. Mr. Stancati said he would want to confer with the
Department of Public Works regarding appropriate action to resolve
the -problem.
There being no further business to come before the Board, upon
motion made by Mr. McMahon, seconded by Mr. Brunner and carried,
the meeting adjourned at 10:45 a.m.
atrick M.
