REGULAR MEETING <br />FEBRUARY 13, 1978 <br />noted that the Common Council has appropriated $20,000 for the work. John <br />DeLee, Building Commissioner, was present and advised the Board that the work <br />will consist of some general rehabilitation, an additional fire exit, plumbing <br />and electrical work and basic repairs. He said the Bureau of Housing has <br />received a Certificate of Appropriateness from the Historic Preservation <br />Commission regarding the rehabilitation. Upon motion made by Mr. McMahon, <br />seconded by Mr. Brunner and carried, the Board approved the request to <br />advertise for bids, with sealed bids to be received on February 27, 1978. <br />CONTRACT FOR RELOCATION SERVICES RE: ORANGE - COLFAX CONNECTOR APPROVED <br />A contract forlproviding relocation services in connection with the Orange - <br />Colfax Connector was taken under advisement by the Board and has now been <br />reviewed and revised by the Department of Public Works and the Legal Department. <br />Deputy City Attorney Terry A. Crone advised the Board that the revised contract <br />is now ready for approval. Mr. McMahon noted that the contract provides for <br />relocation services in connection with properties at 1911 Orange Street, 203 <br />N. Johnson Street, 1905 Orange Street, 1907 Orange Street and 141 Birdsell Street. <br />The contract is with S. M. Dix & Associates, Inc. and is a federal aid -urban <br />funded program. Upon motion made by Mr. McMahon, seconded by Mr. Mullen and <br />carried, the Board approved the contract. <br />UEST TO MARK LOCATIONS OF FIRE HYDRANTS FILED <br />The Board received a letter from Councilman Walter Kopczynski and Clara Kurlanski <br />recommending that the City consider marking the location of fire hydrants with <br />a permanent metal sign at least seven feet above ground to prevent breakage <br />of hydrants after a heavy snowfall. Upon motion made by Mr. McMahon, seconded <br />b.y Mr. Brunner.and carried, the letter was filed and referred to the Bureau of <br />Traffic and Lighting and the South Bend l!!ater Works for review and recommendation. <br />The Board directed that letters of thanks be sent to Mrs. Kurlanski and Councilman <br />Kopczynski for their suggestion. <br />EIGHTH ANNUAL ST. JOSEPH RIVER RUN APPROVED <br />The Board received a request from the Michiana Watershed for the Eighth Annual <br />St. Joseph River Run to be held beginning at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 13. <br />The event will begin at Veteran's Memorial Park, portage at the South Bend Dam <br />and end in Niles. A Waiver of Liability form was submitted for.review. Mr. <br />McMahon noted that the group has informed him they have received Park Department <br />approval for use of the City parks. Upon motion made by Mr. McMahon, seconded <br />by Mr. Brunner and carried, the Board approved the request, subject to coordination <br />of arrangements by the Bureau of Traffic and Lighting and the Police Department <br />Traffic Detail and to the filing of the necessary Certificate of Insurance. <br />ST. PATRICK'S DAY PROGRAM ON RIVER BEND PLAZA APPROVED <br />A tentative program for the Annual St. Patrick's Day Celebration on River Bend <br />Plaza was submitted to the. Board. Chairman-of the event is Red Conery, Co- Chairman <br />is John Docherty, Jr. and Committee Members are Joseph McArdle and Father Edmund <br />J. Murray. The program is to be on Robertson's stage, beginning at 12:00 noon, with <br />a parade, bagpipers, introductions, dancing and a songfest. Upon motion made <br />by Mr. McMahon, seconded by,Mr..Mullen and carried, the program was approved. <br />MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY BED RACE CONDIT._IONALLY APPROVED <br />The Board received a request from the Muscular Dystrophy Association to conduct <br />a "Bed Race" on Saturday, May 6 (raindate May 13) from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., <br />in cooperation with the Downtown Merchants and South Bend Days. They have <br />requested the use of Lafayette Boulevard, from 14ayne to Washington, for the event. <br />Alternate locations suggested were St. Joseph Street, from Wayne to Colfax, or <br />the Supergraphic Area on River Bend Plaza. Upon motion made by Mr. McMahon, <br />seconded by Mr. Brunner and carried, the Board approved the request, subject to <br />determination of an acceptable location by the Bureau of Traffic and Lighting <br />and the Police Department Traffic Detail and the filing of the required Certificate <br />of Insurance. <br />
