:I <br />REGULAR MEETING <br />MARCH 24. 1980 <br />A regular meeting of the Board of Public Works was convened at <br />9:30 a.m., on Monday, March 24, 1980, by President Patrick It. <br />McMahon, with Mr. McMahon, Mr. Richard L. Hill and Zlr. Joseph <br />E. Kernan present. Deputy City Attorney Terry A. Crone was <br />also present. <br />MINUTES OF PREVIOUS MEETING APPROVED <br />Mr. McMahon reported that the minutes of the regular meeting of <br />March 17, 1980, had been reviewed, and Mr. Kernan made a motion <br />that the minutes be approved as submitted. Mr. McMahon seconded <br />the motion, and it carried. <br />APPROVED REQUEST TO RE -NAME FORD STREET TO DYNGUS BOULEVARD <br />Mr. Stanley Thomas, President of the West Side Democratic and <br />Civic Club, requested permission of the Board to re -name Ford <br />Street from Olive to Kosciuszko in celebration of Dyngus Day. <br />He introduced other members and officers of the Club, namely, <br />Stanley Przybylinski, Harry Lodyga, Ed Dobski, Ray Bikowski and <br />Ery Manuszak. Mayor Roger 0. Parent also requested the name change <br />for the week beginning April 7 through April 11, 1980, in apprecia- <br />tion for the contributions made by the Polish community and he <br />presented a proclamation to Mr. Thomas commemorating Dyngus Day <br />on April 7th. Upon a motion made by Mr. McMahon, seconded by Per. <br />Hill and carried, the request was approved. <br />DOWNTOWN CLEAN -UP PROJECT - SOUTH BEND ROTARY <br />Hr. McMahon introduced Mr. Fred Pitzer from the South Bend Rotary <br />Club, who explained that the group would be participating in a <br />20 -block clean -up of the downtown area bordered by the Plaza, <br />Williams, Western and LaSalle Streets. It was stated that the <br />Street Department would furnish the necessary brooms, shovels <br />and provide other assistance. Mr-,. Pitzer explained that the area <br />would be divided by blockswith -d team captain and four workers <br />per block, and the groups would begin cleaning each block at <br />6:45 a.m. on Saturday, March 29, 1980. He stated that Burger <br />Chef had volunteered coffee and rolls for the workers after the <br />clean -up. Mr. McMahon expressed the Board's appreciation to the <br />Rotary Club for their efforts in helping to clean up the downtown <br />area. Mayor Roger 0. Parent stated that the program sponsored by <br />the Rotary Club was a fine example of citizen participation and <br />he welcomed their efforts. Mr. Pitzer indicated that, if rain <br />would prohibit the clean -up, another date would be scheduled. <br />CITY WIDE CLEAN -UP PROGRA14 <br />Mr. McMahon announced that the city -wide clean -up again this year <br />would be held during the week of April 14th, rather than on the <br />weekend as in past years, in order to avoid excessive overtime <br />which the city must pay. He stated that the same city departments <br />would be used as in the past and the same route would be used as <br />the trash pick -up route. <br />VACATION RESOLUTION NO. 3487, 1980 - CONFIRMED <br />(FIRST EAST -WEST ALLEY NORTH OF WESTERN AVENUE <br />This was the date set for holding a public hearing on Vacation <br />Resolution No. 3487, for the vacation of the first east -west alley <br />north of Western Avenue, running west from Illinois Street to the <br />east line of the intersection of the north -south alley for a <br />distance of 129 feet (in LaSalle Park, 2nd Sub.). The Clerk <br />tendered proofs of publication of notice in the South Bend Tribune <br />and the Tri- County News which were found to be sufficient. It was <br />noted that a notice had been sent to all property owners in the <br />vicinity of the proposed vacation and letters had been received <br />LJ' <br />C <br />
