Raclin - Carmichael Hall I Indiana University and University of Notre Dame I South Bend, IN <br />Size <br />78,000 S F <br />Construction Cost <br />$141800,000 <br />Completion Date <br />September 2005 <br />Indiana University and the University <br />of Notre Dame share facilities in <br />Raclin- Carmichael Hall. The building, <br />which houses IU's South Bend Center <br />for Medical Education, is adjacent to <br />the Notre Dame campus, allowing <br />researchers and students from both <br />campuses to work together and learn <br />from each other. <br />Appropriate to location <br />While the building is owned and <br />operated by IU, its limestone and Gothic <br />architecture respect the Notre Dame <br />campus and the neighborhood while <br />establishing a new identity for the South <br />Bend Center for Medical Education. <br />Complex, collaborative elements <br />The new facility contains administrative <br />offices and research facilities for <br />the South Bend Center for Medical <br />Education, which is the South Bend <br />branch of IU's Medical School. Notre <br />Dame occupies offices and research <br />facilities in the new building for the W. M. <br />Keck Center for Transgene Research. <br />Classrooms, laboratories, exam rooms <br />and study lounges, provide room for 24 <br />first- and second -year medical students, <br />who complete their first two years of <br />medical school on -site. The auditorium <br />seats up to 250 people for lectures and <br />programs for students and the local <br />medical community. <br />The multiple stakeholders - IU, Notre <br />Dame and the local healthcare <br />community - required a closely <br />coordinated project process. Two sets <br />of university trustees and university <br />architects offices were engaged and gave <br />guidance and approvals. The facility was <br />designed with flexibility to accommodate <br />a future phase, Harper Hall. <br />
