APRIL 16, 1956 <br />A regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held Mon- <br />day April 16, 1956 at 10:00 A.M. (DST). All members were present. Min- <br />utes of the previous regular meeting were read and approved. Salary <br />claims in the total amount of $91,806.77 were approved. Esarey to attend U. S. Army Duty from <br />May 31, 1956 till June 17, 1956 inclusive was granted by the Board. <br />Request of Capt. Russell L. Hunt to attend Army Reserve Train- <br />ing from June 3, 1956 till June 17, 1956was granted by the Board. <br />Charles R. Quimby having been found fit and having passed all <br />examinations required by the Fire Department is now appointed to the <br />Fire Department. Effective as of April 16, 1956. <br />ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT <br />Ira Hunsberger, Supt, of Electrical Department, recommends that <br />a 4000 lumen light be installed at Crest Avenue and Altgeld Street, Hoke <br />and Altgeld Street, and Sorin, °Street and Hickory Road. He also recommends <br />that the light in the 600 block of Birdsell Street and the light at El- <br />wood Avenue and College Street be increased from 1000 lumen to 4000 lumen. <br />Board approves IV1r. Hunsberger ►s recommendation. <br />Ira Hunsberger recommends that no light be installed in the alley <br />between West LaSalle Avenue and Oak Street. Board approves. <br />This being the date set, hearing was held on the matter of the <br />charges against Officer Poelvoorde of the South Bend Police Department. <br />Said Officer Poelvoorde having appeared before the Board with Police <br />Chief Dutrieux and Assistant Police Chief Burkhart. After discussion of <br />the Board members , the Board now makes the following finding: Said Officer <br />Poelvoorde will-be suspended from police duty for a period of 60 days be- <br />ginning April 6, 1956 without pay. If Mr. Poelvoorde ►s hand injury is <br />not completely healed at the end of the 60 day period, necessary arrange- <br />ments will be made to place said officer on inside duty( if there is':an <br />opening) until such time when the doctor releases him. Officer Poelvoorde <br />pleaded guilty to the charge against him. <br />Applications for the Fire Department were approved for James John <br />Rybak and ordered filed. <br />The appointment of Bernard Switalski to the Police Dept. of the City <br />of South Bend was approved by the Board. Said Switalski having passed the <br />necessary.exams as required by the City, his appointment to become effective <br />as of April 16, 1956. <br />
