APRIL 16, 1956 A regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held Mon- day April 16, 1956 at 10:00 A.M. (DST). All members were present. Min- utes of the previous regular meeting were read and approved. Salary claims in the total amount of $91,806.77 were approved. Request of Officer N. Esarey to attend U. S. Army Duty from May 31, 1956 till June 17, 1956 inclusive was granted by the Board. Request of Capt. Russell L. Hunt to attend Army Reserve Train- ing from June 3, 1956 till June 17, 1956was granted by the Board. Charles R. Quimby having been found fit and having passed all examinations required by the Fire Department is now appointed to the Fire Department. Effective as of April 16, 1956. ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT Ira Hunsberger, Supt, of Electrical Department, recommends that a 4000 lumen light be installed at Crest Avenue and Altgeld Street, Hoke and Altgeld Street, and Sorin, °Street and Hickory Road. He also recommends that the light in the 600 block of Birdsell Street and the light at El- wood Avenue and College Street be increased from 1000 lumen to 4000 lumen. Board approves IV1r. Hunsberger ►s recommendation. Ira Hunsberger recommends that no light be installed in the alley between West LaSalle Avenue and Oak Street. Board approves. This being the date set, hearing was held on the matter of the charges against Officer Poelvoorde of the South Bend Police Department. Said Officer Poelvoorde having appeared before the Board with Police Chief Dutrieux and Assistant Police Chief Burkhart. After discussion of the Board members , the Board now makes the following finding: Said Officer Poelvoorde will-be suspended from police duty for a period of 60 days be- ginning April 6, 1956 without pay. If Mr. Poelvoorde ►s hand injury is not completely healed at the end of the 60 day period, necessary arrange- ments will be made to place said officer on inside duty( if there is':an opening) until such time when the doctor releases him. Officer Poelvoorde pleaded guilty to the charge against him. Applications for the Fire Department were approved for James John Rybak and ordered filed. The appointment of Bernard Switalski to the Police Dept. of the City of South Bend was approved by the Board. Said Switalski having passed the necessary.exams as required by the City, his appointment to become effective as of April 16, 1956.
