Attendees included: Assistant City Attorney Ann-Carol Nash, South Bend
Police Officer Robert Hammer, Common Council Members Ann Puzzello and AI
"Buddy" Kirsits, University of Notre Dame Representatives Student Body President
Catherine Soler, Claire Sokas and Tim Sexton, Saint Mary's Representatives Rachel
Chesley and Patrick Daniel, Robinson Center Adult Program Coordinator Marguerite
Taylor, Attorney Richard Nussbaum, Representative of Indiana University South Bend
Jeff Jones, Alcoholic Beverage Board Member Mike Carrington, Mark Kramer of Kramer
Properties, Neighborhood Residents Matt Costello and Kyle Chamberlain and South
Bend Tribune Reporter Margaret Fosmoe.
INDIANA UNIVERSITY SOUTH BEND
Jeff Jones greeted everyone and hoped there was no difficulty with parking. He stated
that this year for the Fall Semester there were 8,590 students which is 10% higher than
last year and is an all time high. A record was also set in the last two years for number
of credit hours. This means there is continuing growth in full-time students as opposed
to part-time (now at 30%). IUSB is having increasing parking problems due to this
growth in student population. They have acquired 39 properties and owned and
managed those properties. This year -not as much -due to the plan to begin to tear
these properties down and they want to minimize controversy. The tear down is to
increase parking availability that is badly needed. A parking garage is a possibility.
IUSB now has 400 beds in the River Crossing Suites that are 2-4 bedrooms for on-
campus housing and this year there were 295 occupants. Most students are local
residents so the choice can be to live at home or move on campus.
Ann Puzzello asked Jeff which student lives farthest away and he responded that there
are some athletes from different parts of Michigan, a few from the East Coast and 233
