112 <br />August 9, 1954 <br />L <br />The regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held Monday, <br />August 91 1954, at 10 :00 A. M. All members were present. Minutes of the <br />previous meeting -were read and approved. Salary claims in the amount of <br />$80,780.09 were approved. Claims of the following suppliers, in the total <br />amount of $1151.35: were approved and ordered paid: <br />American La:France Foamite Co. <br />Ericksen & Olson <br />Indiana & Michigan Electric <br />Indiana & Michigan Electric <br />William S. Walz, Inc. <br />80.00 <br />59 .5a <br />The Board reviewed the bids opened at the preceding regular meeting <br />and awarded the contract to supply the Fire Department with one half-ton <br />pickup truck to Scherman- Schaus- Freeman Company on the basis of this bid <br />being in the best interests of the department and the City of South Bend. <br />The report of Lieutenant Gerald Haag, covering a run made by Engine <br />Company No. 11 to outlying area of Portage Township, under date of July <br />171 1954, was examined and ordered filed. <br />Fire Department Injury Reports covering the period of May 22nd to <br />July 18th inclusive was examined and ordered filed. <br />POLICE DEPARTMENT: <br />Chief of Police, Richard J. Gillen, being present, recommended the <br />appointment of Charles J. Brugh as a special police officer, in the <br />capacity of a self- employed merchant policeman, and the appointment was <br />made accordingly. <br />Chief Gillen next took up with the Board the request of Police <br />Officer D. Rhymer to be considered for pensioning at this time. The Board <br />was informed by Chief Gillen that the Police Pension Board does not <br />consider Officer Rhymer eligible for pension until May 1955• The further <br />request of Officer Rhymer for a thirty day leave of absence,without pay, <br />was also considered by the Board. Both requests were denied. <br />The request of Captain Russell L. Hunt to be excused from regular <br />duty for the period of August 15th to August 29th inclusive, for the <br />purpose of participating in the summer field training of the 764th <br />Amphibious Tank Battalion at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin, of which he is a <br />Captain with Headquarters Company, met with the Board's approval and <br />is, accordingly, granted. <br />Chief Gillen recommended to the Board, the attendance of Captain <br />Elmer Sokol to the annual conference of the Indiana State Probation and <br />Parole Association to be held September 13, 14, and 15th at Specner, <br />Indiana. The Board granted approval tentatively, contingent upon funds <br />being found available for the expense involved. <br />ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT: <br />The recommendation of Supt. Ira Hunsberger for the installation of <br />a 4000 lumen light at the southeast corner of Kaley and Holland Streets, <br />and at the northwest west corner of Columbia and Paris Streets, was <br />approved by the Board. <br />An undated petition, requestixg street light for the middle of the <br />1200 block west Colfax Avenue was denied by the Board, in view of the <br />fact that this block is found to be well lighted-with the existing <br />installations. <br />A petition, dated August 3, 1954, to improve street lighting on Longley <br />Street and Goodland Avenue was referred to Supt.
