Co. <br />5.27 <br />'OLICE DEPARTMENT: <br />Chief of Police, Richard J. Gillen, being present, recommended_ to the <br />oa.rd, the appointment of Virgil P. Sorge, employee of American District <br />elegraph Co., Inc., as a. special police officer in and for the City of <br />ouch Bend. The Board approved and made this appointment. <br />The Chief next brought to the attention of the Board, the need for <br />isposal of an excessive number of unclaimed - bicyclez.naw occupying valuable <br />torage space. In the absence of the chairman of the Board, action was <br />eferred in this matter. <br />IRE DEPARTMENT: <br />The Board next examined the Fire Department application of John T. <br />allo and ordered application to be placed on file. <br />TRICAL DEPARTMENT: <br />The Board next examined a drawing attached to a letter addressed to <br />he Board, under date of June 18, 1954, in which Supt. Ira Hunsberger <br />recommends the issuing of permit to Indiana Bell Telephone Company to <br />proceed with the proposed underground work, indicated by the drawing, <br />and approved the manhole construction and moving of conduit as proposed. <br />Petitions for improved street lighting in the 1300 block East Altgeld <br />tr_eet and at the intersections of Donald and Oliver Streets and Marshall <br />treet and Holiday Drive, were examined and referred to Supt. Hunsberger <br />or investigation and report. <br />The Board next considered the proper allocating of the maintenance, <br />eating and utility costs for Hose House No. 3, now serving as the Police <br />Department communications center, among the three departments making use <br />of the building to a greater or lesser degree. It was agreed that the <br />Department of Public Works and Safety budget for the year 1955 is to <br />include an increased allowance for heat with which to provide fuel oil <br />required for the heating of Hose House No. 3. The Board directed the <br />C _er', to notify the Northern Indiana, Public Service Company to discontinue <br />gas service to this building, disconnecting and plugging gas pipe at the <br />m iri. Further this <br />of the operating status and necessary budgeting <br />to meet expense connected with this building, was then deferred to the <br />next regular meeting of the Board. <br />The Police Department monthly report, covering May 1954, was examined <br />a d placed on file. <br />There being no further business to come before the Board, the meeting <br />w s adjourned at 11 :20 A.
