Rn <br />February 15, 1954. <br />A regular meeting of the <br />Board <br />of Public Safety was held Monday, <br />February 15, 1954 at 10:00 A. <br />M. Mr. I. A. Harwich was absent. <br />Minutes <br />of the previous meeting were <br />read and approved. Duck, being present, first discussed with the <br />Board difficulty being experienced with the heating unit of Fire Station <br />No. 5. Estimating the probable cost of repairs needed to place this <br />unit in satisfactory condition to be approximately $40.00, the Board <br />directed the Chief to proceed in the matter. <br />Fire Department applications of the following applicants were <br />examined and ordered placed on file: <br />Thomas A. Dansher <br />Joseph L. Solmos <br />ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT: <br />Superintendent Ira Hunsberger, being present, first took up with the <br />Board, a letter addressedto his department, from McKinley Howel.l,.Supt. <br />of the LaPorte Sub - District of the Indiana State Highway Commission. <br />The Board examined the letter and directed Superintendent Hunsberger to <br />consult with Traffic Engineer, E. H. Miller, in formulating his reply. <br />Superintendent Hunsberger again brought up his need for a two -way <br />radio, stressing its value particularly in connection with night calls <br />The Board then directed the Clerk to obtain two or-more quotations on <br />this equipment to 'submit at the next regular meeting of the Board. <br />POLICE DEPARTMENT: <br />Chief of Police, Richard J. Gillen, being present, placed before <br />the Board the required forms for the appointment of -special police <br />officers and recommended for such appointment Ernest G. Streich, self- <br />employed merchant policeman, and Jordan B. Whitney, an employee of <br />American District Telegraph Co., Inc. The Board approved both appoint- <br />ments and affixed their signatures and seal thereto. <br />Chief Gillen then discussed with the Board, a request placed with <br />the Chief by Irma Collmer, Executive Director, St. Joseph County Tuber- <br />culosis League, for the enforcement of an anti - spitting ordinance, and <br />for permission to place placards pertaining to the league's Anti- Spitting <br />campaign on downtown lighting poles.
