Anderson <br />Agnes H. Brainerd <br />Maxine. L. Kambol <br />Upon recommendation and approval of Chief of Police, Richard J. <br />Gillen,.these applicants were thereupon appointed by the'Board to <br />be members of the Police Auxiliary School Patrol, effective September 1, <br />1953• <br />The Board next approved the return'to active duty in the Police <br />Department of Patrolman Ervin Plenener, effective September 1, 1953• <br />This police officer has been on military leave of absence from the <br />department. <br />Chief of Police Gillen next brought to the attention of the Board <br />the crowded condition of the County Jail, which has reached the point <br />where the Sheriff-will no longer accept custody of felons sentenced <br />by the City Court, and such prisoners must serve their sentences in <br />the confines of the City Jail, which is not suitable for this type <br />of imprisonment, and which will immediately be crowded beyond its <br />limited capacity. It was suggested that city,prisoners, under extend- <br />ed sentence, be placed in the'County Jails of adjoining Counties, <br />upon the negotiation of such an arrangement. It was also suggested <br />that the Board contact the Board of County Commissioners relative to <br />the possibility-of the usage of cells in the cell block of the St. <br />Joseph.County-Infirmary. The.maximum capacity of the City Jail being <br />ten prisoners, and prisoners at the,preaentt moment numbering four, <br />the Chairman of the Board brought the discussion to a close with the <br />suggestion,,'twe will face up to the situation when it confronts us." <br />Police Officer's Report, dated August 23, 1953 concerning removal <br />of an indigent from the doorway of Laurel School to the County Infirmary, <br />was noted and ordered filed. <br />Police Officers Report, dated August 24.. 1953, concerning accident <br />involving Squad Car No. 43 and a Brink's Armored Truck, was noted and <br />ordered filed. <br />A petition for improved lighting in the 2000 block Kenwood Street, <br />was referred to Superintendent Ira Hunsberger for investigation and <br />report. <br />Pire Department Captains and Lieutenants Daily Reports, dated <br />August 1.9, 24th and 26th covering runs made to outlying.area, and in- <br />volving Engine Companies 21, 11, 7, 8, 12 and l3 were examined and <br />ordered filed. <br />There being no further business to come before the Board, the meeting <br />adjourned at 11:45 A.
