Gillen being present, recommended to the <br />Board, the appointment of John C. Howard, of the Carson Secret Service, <br />Indianapolis, and Virgil P. Sorge, employed by the American District <br />Telegraph Co. Inc., South Bend to be special police officers in and for <br />the City of South Bend. The Board approved these appointments. <br />The Chief next asked permission of the Board for his department's <br />Chief Radio ?Maintenance Ilan to attend the conference of the Associated <br />Police Communications Officers to be held in Detroit, August 26, 27, and <br />28th. Permission was granted by the Board. <br />Discussion next ensued on the topic of the use and value of the <br />automotic speed detector. The Chief pointed out its special value in <br />ascertaining speed violations to sustain complaints filed, particularly <br />on short stretches of street, citing TvlfcKinley Avenue between Eddy and <br />Sunnyside, and Thomas Street, as examples, where it is impossible to <br />"pace" speed violators with a squad car. <br />A petition, dated June 29, 1953, requesting a street light at the <br />ntersection of 311th Street and East Washington Avenue, was examined and <br />eferred to the superintendent of the Electrical Department for investi- <br />ation and report. <br />Report of run made to Sanitary Land Fill on Douglas Road, by Engine <br />ompany No. 13, July 20, 1953, signed by Lieut. Steve Flowers, was examined <br />nd ordered filed. <br />Fire Department Injuries Report for the month of July was received and <br />rdered filed. <br />The June 1953 Report of the Police Department was received and ordered <br />iled. <br />There being no further business to come before the Board, the meeting <br />journed at 11:45 A.
