N11- <br />SPECIAL MEETING <br />April 10, 1953 <br />A special meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held at 11 :00 <br />A. M. Friday, April 10, 1953, for the purpose of a hearing in the case <br />of Police Officer Thomas Grant, Jr., in accordance with decision made <br />in this matter at the previous regular meeting of the Board, Monday, <br />April 6, 1953. All members were present. <br />Chief of Police, Richard J. Gillen, being present, was called upon <br />by the chairman of the Board to bring Officer Grant before the Board. <br />Officer Grant and Sgt. Robert Seals, representing the Fraternal Order of <br />Police, then appeared and Officer Grant was asked by chairman, Irving A. <br />Hurwich what statement he'might care to make with reference to the charges <br />for which he has been suspended. Officer Grant gave a detailed account <br />of his movements, admitting being away from his assigned territory and <br />late in arriving at the accident scene to which he had been called. <br />Chairman Hurwich then read the report, submitted over the signature of <br />Sgt. Leonard Krulewitch concerning Officer Grantfs suspension. Chairman <br />Hurwich then stated that Officer Grant's violation of Rule 19 was in- <br />excusable, pointing out the quasi- military basis on which all police <br />organizations must operate. <br />Chairman Hurwich then asked <br />hile the Board deliberated upon <br />f Officer Grant some discussion <br />etween the reports. In the absence <br />took place concerning the discrepancies <br />consensus of opinion that the superior <br />Lned for the good of the department and the <br />Officer Grant was again called before the Board and informed that <br />he Board could not condone his violation of Rule 19 and 'pit is the <br />ecision of the Board that the charges have been sustained ". Officer <br />rant was then informed that his suspension without pay from April 4th to <br />nd including April 10th is confirmed by the Board and he is ordered to <br />eturn to active duty tomorrow, Saturday, April 11, 1953, at 4 :30 P.M. <br />The hearing, having been concluded, the meeting was thereupon <br />journed, the time being 11 :45 A.
