JOINT MEDIA ADVISORY
City of South Bend
St. Joseph County

For Release
Thursday, October 07, 2010

Contact: Mikki Dobski, 574. 876.1564 (C)

Natural gas line ruptures closes downtown
offices and courthouses

South Bend, IN:City of South Bend and St. Joseph County Officials have announced
that all city and county offices in downtown South Bend, including absentee voting, have
been closed for the remainder of the day, as a result of the ruptured natural gas line on
Jefferson Boulevard, between Michigan and Main Streets. In addition, the downtown
South Bend County Courthouses are also closed for the day.
Absentee voting is available in Mishawaka, at the County Services Building
located at 217 L.W.W.
Fire, Police, and Public Works Department crews are working with Nipsco to
secure the area while repairs are being made. Traffic is prohibited from Wayne to
Washington and from St. Joseph St. to Lafayette Blvd.
When the repairs are completed, an “all-clear” will be issued. Until then,
residents are asked to avoid the area to allow crews to complete the work as quickly and
safely as possible. At this time, it is expected that all county and city offices will re-open,
as usual, Friday morning.
###
