REGULAR MEETING <br />s/Laura Vasquez, Member <br />s/Eddie Miller, Member <br />Attest: <br />s /Linda Martin, Clerk <br />FIRE DEPARTMENT <br />JUNE 23, 2010 51 <br />ADOPT RESOLUTION NO. 41-2010 — A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF PUBLIC SAFETY OF <br />THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA, COMMENDING ENGINEER BRANDON MAY <br />Chief Howard Buchanon, Fire Department, read the following commendation and congratulated and <br />thanked Engineer May for his outstanding rescue while off -duty. The Board joined Chief Buchanon <br />in thanking and congratulating him. Engineer May stated he was in the right place at the right time, <br />and it was due to the excellent training he has received in the South Bend Fire Department's River <br />Rescue team that he was able to rescue the citizen from the river. He added he has since talked to the <br />gentleman and he feels as though he was given a second chance in life and is grateful he was not <br />successful in taking his own life. Chief Buchanon informed Engineer May that he submitted the <br />commendation to the EMS Conference Committee to recommend him for award. Upon a motion <br />made by Mr. Cottrell, seconded by Mr. BonDurant and carried, the following Resolution was <br />adopted by the Board of Public Works: <br />RESOLUTION NO. 41 -2010 <br />COMMENDATION FOR ENGINEER BRANDON MAY <br />WHEREAS, the Board of Public Safety wishes to issue commendations to individuals that <br />perform meritorious service on behalf of the citizens of this community, and; <br />WHEREAS, such service shall be recognized by the Board of Public Safety and appropriate <br />commendation shall be presented to the individuals performing said meritorious service; <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that commendation be given to: <br />Engineer Brandon May <br />On June 1, 2010 at approximately 7:20 PM, Engineer Brandon May was on North Riverside <br />Blvd. on his way home after a 50 mile bike ride when he noticed a male walking towards the <br />riverbank, shortly disappearing over the edge of the riverbank and hearing a splash and a groan <br />downstream. Brandon then rode his bike along the river edge attempting to sight the victim. With <br />the help of some bystanders, he located the victim floating downstream approximately half way <br />across the river. Without hesitation, he entered the cold, chilly, fast moving current and intercepted <br />the victim without the aid a floatation device or thermal protection. <br />After gaining control of the male and drifting under the Michigan St. Bridge, he swam the <br />victim to shore where South Bend Fire Department personnel were able to assist Firefighter Brandon <br />May and the victim out of the river. <br />With the quick response from the bystanders and the efforts, courage and extensive training <br />of Firefighter Brandon May the outcome of the event that day most certainly would have been tragic <br />as the victim as not able to help himself. <br />Be it further resolved that Firefighter Brandon May be commended and recognized for his <br />quick actions, dedication, and professionalism. His actions reflect highly upon himself, the South <br />Bend Fire Department, and the City of South Bend. <br />ADOPTED this 23rd day of June, 2010. <br />BOARD OF PUBLIC SAFETY <br />CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA <br />
