South Bend Redevelopment Commission
Regular Meeting –April 23, 2010

5. OLD BUSINESS

A. Public Hearings

(5) continued…

improvement, but we fully expect an
improvement. There would definitely be no
harm done.

Ms. Jones noted that the revised plan still
leaves a pond, and ponds are not attractive.
Mr. Schalliol assured her they could be made
to look better, and we would do the best we
could to make it more attractive.

Ms. Jones said ponds would be more
attractive on the golf course, as well as more
public friendly. Mr. Schalliol responded that
moving the interior pond to the golf course
would leave vacant land that is not suitable
for development because of its interior
location. Martins and Menards don’t need
more parking.

Ms. Jones said she was trying to express Mr.
Varner’s concerns. Mr. Varner was unable to
attend this meeting and asked Ms. Jones to
convey his preference for the pond to be
moved to the golf course, to improve the
course, and to use TIF funds to benefit more
people. Ms. Jones said she also respects
those concerns.

Mr. Schalliol responded that the revised
plan’s lower cost allows staff the opportunity
to consider making improvements to the golf
course and around it. We could make a
dedicated left turn lane onto High Street from
Ireland. Ireland would have to be widened
there, impacting the golf course and creating
an opportunity to make improvements to that
9
