South Bend Redevelopment Commission
Regular Meeting –April 9, 2010

these ponds is the stagnant water. I did take a
picture, you can see the slime on top of it. I
think this is prime breeding ground for
mosquitoes. My husband and I are an athletic
family and we frequently take walks in the
summer. We had to stop walking next to the
fencing of the current ponds because the
mosquitoes are so bad over there in the
summer. You can’t even walk by it. They are
horrible. I have a slight paranoia of the West
Nile. Two years ago my father contracted it,
fortunately he survived but it was a long road
of recovery. I know this could happen
anywhere at any time, living directly across
from a pond is going to increase our chances,
if not just the West Nile, the annoyance of a
large influx of mosquitoes every where. This
would not be enjoyable to deal with while we
are trying to have a grill out on our patio or
just be in our yard playing.

In conclusion, I would like to provide a
possible solution for the dilemma the Brady
household is facing. I have spoken with Bill
Schalliol earlier this week and his suggestion
and recommendation was to ask you, the
City, to add our property to the acquisition
list to acquire our residence in addition to the
others you are seeking. Less than a year ago,
the City was interested in our property and
we were actually under contract to sell, and
then things fell through on the City’s end. It
was a big disappointment to us because we
really did not want to have to live next to
these ponds. While not looking to take
advantage of the City, we are not asking for
any more money, nor do we want to stop this
project. We would be willing to go under
contract for the same selling amount offered
to us last year. We understand, for South
Bend to continue to grow and reach its fullest
potential, changes have to happen. We are
16
