REGULAR MEETING March 26, 2018
you guys do, is what Councilmember White alluded to. There are younger people watching you. I
know you guys know this. People I run into today, they say, `I remember when you played
basketball.' You guys set the example. Whatever you guys do after this, all that discipline,
repetition and what you've learned will help you in college.
Council President Tim Scott then asked all the parents of the young men, in attendance, to please
stand and be recognized.
This being the time heretofore set for the Public Hearing on the above bill, proponents and
opponents were given an opportunity to be heard.
Samuel Brown, 222 E. Navarre Street, South Bend, IN, stated, I chased one (1) of these myself.
As a matter of fact, one (1) of the coach's fathers played guard with me. It is quite an honor to
chase this thing. You guys did a remarkable job. I have ties to Riley. My daughter, Jasmine, is the
two (2)time Class President. She broke the ground for that new school. Anyway, back to athletics.
Mr. Owens and Mr. Gavin hit on something. I tell my grandson every day on the way to school
and I ask `What are we doing?' and he says `Academic All-American.' I look at his grades every
other day. He has a three point four (3.4). We haven't gotten to three point five (3.5) but it's
important. These little kids are going to watch you. Fifty (50) years later, when my granddaughter
went to LaSalle, they showed her my picture on the wall. She didn't know who I was. Whatever
you do, don't let your waistline get like mine. It's embarrassing when they don't know where
you're at. But one (1) of you are going to do that. You are going to take your child back to Riley
and say that's us. Congratulations to you guys.
Councilmember Jo M. Broden made a motion to add a Whereas clause that states: "Whereas, these
young men have demonstrated the same determination and commitment off the court by
maintaining a team grade point average of over 3.0;" Councilmember Dr. David Varner seconded
this motion which carried unanimously by a voice vote of nine (9) ayes.
Councilmember Gavin Ferlic made a motion to adopt Bill No. 18-11, as amended,by acclamation.
Councilmember Karen White seconded this motion which carried unanimously by a voice vote of
nine (9) ayes.
REPORTS OF CITY OFFICES
Representing the City Administration: Laura O'Sullivan, Chief of Staff
RESOLVE INTO THE COMMITTEE OF THE WHOLE
At 7:28 p.m. Councilmember Karen White made a motion to resolve into the Committee of the
Whole.
