South Bend Redevelopment Commission
Regular Meeting –March 5, 2010

6. NEW BUSINESS

A. Public Hearing

(1) continued…

think the students and Rev. Blake have
expressed that more eloquently than I could
have. I did have an opportunity last summer
to meet with and get to know a number of
students in the Project Impact program. We
had some discussions about economics. I
just want to report to you that I found the
students to be quite knowledgeable, quite
intelligent. They asked some very perceptive
questions, actually, that compare with
questions I get from university students at
Notre Dame. So, the issue is really is the job
readiness and providing some of the ways to
overcome the obstacles of the backgrounds
some of the students have presented. I think
there’s not any question about the ability of
the students to handle jobs in the work
environment.

I just want to mention, I’m tremendously
impressed with the work that Rev. Blake and
James Summers and Shane Peters have been
doing. They are tremendously dedicated to
this program, as I think you can tell. They
put their heart and soul into it and it’s really
made a difference.

This program is certainly good for the
students, but it’s good for the rest of us in the
community. All of us who have an interest
in South Bend and South Bend being a
vibrant community. I want to see this
program work. It’s good for the students, it’s
good for business, it’s good for the general
community. And it sends a strong message
beyond this particular program. It sends a
20
