South Bend Redevelopment Commission
Regular Meeting –March 5, 2010

6. NEW BUSINESS

A. Public Hearing

(1) continued…

fathers so they don’t have to miss school
because they don’t have a place to take their
youth. We also have in our plans to set up an
IT station where they can sell service,
troubleshoot computers for the public, for
companies, while they are learning. We’re
looking for job opportunities along the way.
So that they know how to go out and get a
job, they know how to bid on a project, they
know how to talk and walk like they need to
in order to get and keep a job.

These are jobs that are going to sustain them.
They can take our certifications anywhere
and get a viable job, starting at $18/hour up
to $27/hour. Again, I don’t know if you have
our communication in front of you, but we
have an application to South Bend Housing
Authority SHIP program so that they can
start right now, learning how to go along
with these skilled workers to make bids, to
see how to talk to a householder, see if they
can get this job for themselves and make
money along the way. That’s why we’re
asking for a portion of the funds because it is
an implementation budget. It’s a huge
budget we have. We’ve applied to various
sources so we’re not dependent on one
source. I just ask that you take a look at that.
See if perhaps there’s some way we can both
utilize the funds to make this happen. I think
what Project Impact is doing is necessary. I
do think IAGO/YouthBuild, we can do a lot
of positive things together in the Urban
Enterprise Zone. Thank you.

14
