Board of Public Works,
South Bend, Indiana.
i
Gentlemen:
We$ the undersigned committee of engineers appointed under your
resolution of January IOth., I9289 to report upon the necessity for a conrete.
cradle under the Elwood Avenue sewer, report as follows:
' The question submitted to us is best stated by quoting from your
li resolution as follows: "The construction of the Northwest sewer along Elwood Avenue
has disclosed -some very unstable soil condition. Sections of quicksand of variable
length are frequently encountered. In order that the reinforced concrete pipe may
have 1the-advantage of trenen support, and any assistance afforded by proper bedding
and back filling, a concrete cradling has been provided for the reinforc-ed concrete p
pipt throughout the sections where the bad soil conditions exist, to safeguard the
pipe from failure by crushing. It was anticipated that concrete cradling would be
used in the construction of this sewer, but not to the extent that it has been used,
or possibly will ne necessary, in as much as extended underground examinations of
the soil conditions was not possible". And quoting further This committee of engine
advising withrthe-Board of Public Works and the City Civil Lngineer, is requested to
submit, after proper investigation, a report as to whether or not, in it's opinion,
the use of boncrete cradling through the quicksand sections along Elwood Ivenue, in
connection with the construction of the North-west Trunk Sewer, is necessary to the
safe construction of the sewer."
in response to your request we have examined the plans and specification
for this sewer, Vie have questioned the City Civil Engineer and other connected with th
work, and we have made an examination of the construction work on the graund, examing
the sewer where now under construction, and the nature of the soil under excavation,
ii
gs a result of this investigation, we are of the opinion that the concre
cradling, as shown upon the plans, is justified
particularly in the support of a sewer
of the size and depth, and involving the important expenditures required in the North-
west sewer system.
Respectfully dubmitted,
signed Charles B. Burdick
Wm. S. Moore
Charles W. Cole by 177. H.
