49 <br />METING--OCTOBER 9, 1939 <br />Regular meeting of the Board of PublieWorks was held on Monday, October 9, 1939, at <br />9:00 A.M# All members were present. Minutes of the Previous meeting were read and ap- <br />proved. Payrolls of the various departments in the amount of $7p551.86 and claims of <br />the following suppliers in the amount of $118.16 were approved and ordered paid: <br />J. A. Orr Company $12.30 0. J. Shoemaker $92.87 <br />River Park Lumber Co. Inc. 1.62 The South Bend Supply Co. 6.75 <br />River Park Lumber Co. Inc. 4.62 <br />The following claims in the amount of $844.73 to be paid out of the Special W.P.A. <br />Account or Special Intercepter Sewer Account were approved and ordered paid: <br />Robertson Bros. Williams <br />1.42 Rocco Simeri <br />30.00 Salaries <br />75 00 <br />738.33 <br />STREET LIGHTING: Mr. Qualls was present and made reports on several petitions which had <br />previously been referred to him for investigation: ,A 4000 lumen light was recommended <br />to be installed at each of the following intersections: Michigan and Altgeld, Michigan <br />and Fairview and Michigan and the city limits. The Board accepted this report on street <br />lighting on South Mich igan Street, but a limited budget does not permit the installatic <br />of these lights at this time. <br />Mr. Qualls did not recommend a light at the intersection of Francis Street and <br />South Bend Avenue for the reason that a light now exists on Francis Street but a short <br />distance from the intersection and he does not believe an additional light is justifiab <br />Mr. Qualls did not recommend the installation of a light at the corner of Dubail <br />and Catalpa Streets at this time. <br />A petition for the removal of a street light on 25th Street in the middle of the <br />800 block to the corner of Wall and 25th Streets, together with the report of Mr. Qualls <br />was referredto the Engineering Department. <br />Mr. Qualls, in a written communication, reported to the Board that the Indiana & <br />Michigan Electric Company refused to move a light pole at the east end of the Colfax <br />Bridge that is in line with the proposed driveway of the Johnson Oil Company. The re- <br />port was accepted by the Board and ordered placed on file and Mr. Qualls was authorized <br />to convey this information to the officials of the Johnson Oil Company <br />A letter was received from Laura L. Smith protesting against the removal of street <br />cars and buses and was placed on file. <br />ENGINEERING DEPT: <br />A communication from the City Plan Commission relative to complaints of property <br />owners in Harter Heights and Hillcrest Additions against the use of vacant lots along <br />Michigan Central tracks as storage yard and construction headquarters for W.P.A. work <br />was referred to the Engineer. <br />A petition to improve an alley between Florence Avenue and Sibley.Street extending <br />from College to Wilber Streets was referred to the Engineering Department. <br />A petition for sidewalk on Hoke Street between Bowman and Calvert Streets was re- <br />ferred to the Engineering Department. <br />CEMETERY DEPARTMENT: Mr. McNabb was present and matters pertaining to his department <br />were discussed. Pdr. McNabb filed his financial report for the month of Sept -ember sh <br />receipts of $44.00 in the General Fund. <br />STREET DEPARTMMT: Mr. Zmudzinski was present and matters pertaining to his department <br />were 7isausse <br />A notice to terminate lease for the following described property: <br />Four (4) acres of South 20 acres of the North 40 acres of the East half of <br />the Southeast Quarter of Section No. 33, Township No. 38 North;. Range 2 <br />East, St.Joseph County, Indiana, <br />which property has been used by the city as a dumping ground,was received from Martin <br />Kaniewski. The Street Commissioner was notified of the termination of the lease to be- <br />come effective January 2, 1940, and was instructed to commence covering the dump with <br />soil in accordance with the original lease dated December 27, 1922. <br />Mr. Zmudzinski reported to the Board the difficulty his men were having in cleaning <br />streets because of the number of cars parked all night. The Board notified him that it <br />would take the matter up with the Police Department for enforcement of the ordinance <br />in such cases made and provided. <br />Mr. Zmudzinski reported an accident which occurred at the intersection of Adams and <br />Vassar when Harry Plencnerts car hit a manhole, thereby breaking the windshield of the <br />car and possibly causing other damage.
