34 SPECIAL __-MEETIU G July -14, 1938 -- - A special meeting of the Board of Public Works was held on Thursday, July 14, 1938, : ,> at 10:00 A. M. Two members were present. Mr. Hunter was absent. - ,/The purpose of this special meeting was to consider entering into a contract with the Northern Indiana Railway, Inc. for the elimination of street cars on Washington Avenue, Chapin Street, and Sample.Street, and the substitution of Motor buses as per agreement presented and recorded in the minutes of the meeting of June 27th.: Mr. R. R. Smith., receiver for the Northern_ Indiana Railway, Inc., havibg exhibited evidence of legal publication of the agreement under consideration, it was regularly moved, seconded and carried that the Board of Public Works enter into this agreement subject to the approval of the Common Council and the agreement was accordinglysigned by each member of the Board. F j The purpose of the meeting having been accomplished, the Board adjourned at 10.-30 A. M. Board of Publicol6rks ATTEST: Clerk MEETING July 18, 1938 j Regular meeting of the Board of Public Works was held on Monday, July.18, 1938, at 10 '00 A. ,M. All members were present. Minutes of the two previous meetings were read and approved. Claims in the amount of $7.25 were approved and ordered paid: Fischoff Cabinet Company 4.50 C. E. Knapp 2.75 /The City Civil Engineer, F. J. Anderson, suggested that appraisers be appointed for the purpose of establishing benefits and damages covering Bondernation Resolution No. 2496. Upon regular motion seconded and carried, the following were appointed as appraisers: 0. C. Denniston.,Fred W. Keller, and Phil Bon Durant. `lThe question of furnishing gasoline for W. P. A. supervisors was discussed by the Board with Mr. Weer and it was regularly moved, seconded and carried that the policy of the Board shall be that no gasoline shall be furnished these Supervisors. A commun- ication setting forth this decision was directed to Mr.Aer. ✓A delegation consisting of four members of the Central Civic Association and Dr. Palicki were present at the meetinIg asking that while Western Avenue was being re -sur- faced that the Board arrange at the same time to widen the street from Maple Street to Taylor. The Board informed the delegation that this was a matter over which the State had supervision and referred them to that Department. `IA delegation of property owners living in the vicinity of Kembie Avenue was present to discuss tri.th Mr. R. R. Smith and Mr. W. W. Waterson of the Northern Indiana Railway Company the possibility of re -installing a bus service on Kanble Avenue from Indiana Avenue south to Ewing. After a thorough discussion of this matter it was regularly moved, seconded and carried that the Railway Company be instructed to continue the opera- tion ot the buses as at the present time until a fair operating experience may be had. Mr. Russell Turk of the South Bend Awning Company was present and presented a sketc for the installation of an awning across the sidewalk at the Carroll Cafe, 515 Lincoln Way West, which required the erection of an iron post at the curb to support the awning. The Board, after fully discussing this matter, decided to refuse permission to erect thi awning. ✓A petition was presented by residents in the vicinity of Riverside Drive between ,eland avenue End Golden Avenues, asking that a light on post No. 944 be re-established. This /petition was submitted to Mr. Qualls for investigation and recommendation. "A petition signed by residents in.::the vicinity of 33rd wndWall Street was presented requesting that a street light be installed at this intersection.
