All members were present.' <br />Minutes of the previous meeting were read.and approved. <br />January 3, 1938, <br />Claims in the amount of $6.75 were approved and ordered paid. <br />;/Continuation Certificates of Excavation bonds in favor of Adolph Dutrieux and Com- <br />pany and the"'United Heating and Plumbing Company were approved. <br />/Mr. Y% H. Longnecker submitted his report of the operations,of. his department for <br />the year 1937. This report is onfile in the office of the Board of Public Forks. <br />F.L.Mendez 8E Company submitted a claim for 404.54 which they claim vas the expense <br />of putting a car oi,�:7.ed by Mr. Mathew Manusak into running order due to an accident -on <br />Johnson. Street when it was claimed_ that Mr.Manusak ran into a clan -hole with a loose cov- <br />er. This matter having been brought to the attention of the Board in August 19'17 but <br />never approved, the Board now confirms its former action to, dis-allow this claim and <br />F. L. Mendez were so notified. <br />/Mr. Longnecker submitted his report of the operations of the Cemetery Department <br />for the month of December, showing collections of- 282.50, for regular care of lots.. <br />This report is on file in the office of the Public Works, <br />Mrs. Taylor submitted a request from the South Bend City Council that the Norther. <br />Indiana RailwayCompany be requested to eliminate street cars on Washington; Chapin, <br />and. Sample Streets and Prairie Avenue. The Clerk was instructed to communicate with <br />the Railway Company regarding this matter. <br />✓ Mrs. Taylor submitted a resolution of the Common Council supported by a. petition <br />signed by 61 residents requesting that the Northern`:. Indiana Railway Company Mend <br />its.bus line on Portage Avenue to Bergen Street. `jhe Clerk was instructed to communi� <br />sate with the Railway Company and request them to meet with the Board at its next reg- <br />ular meeting. <br />-,Mr. James d. Pierce filed with the Board Continuation Certificate of insurance <br />policies coveri ,g public liability in connection with the equipment used in carrying <br />out his garbage contract. This Certificate was approved by the Board. Mr. Pierce <br />submitted a Continuation_ Certificate of his contract Bond covering faithful perform- <br />ance of his contract for the collection of garbage to Lee. 19 1938. This was approv- <br />ed by the Board. <br />✓ City Traffic Engi^eer Diller, submitted a request for the erection of a barricade <br />reflector buttons at a point where Peashv;ay Street dead -ends intoMic.higan Street. <br />lit�aith <br />IThe Board ordered that the Street Lepartment put up a barricade in accordance with <br />this request. <br />f A communication was received from the Mayor requesting that so far as possible <br />materials used in all departments be purchased on the basis of competftive bids. The <br />Mayor also suggests that these purchases of :materials end e,:,uipment for all "departments <br />including the Yater Works be made through the Board of Public 1- orks end Safety .and that <br />,the prorer records be kept of the time and order and delivery and of prices raid; The <br />lBoar.d requested the Clerk to notify all Departments that from this time forward any <br />purchases involving an appreciable expenditure of money be referred to the Board before <br />purchases <br />actual purchase is made, but that there the same type of material may be secured <br />I,from various suppliers that competitive bids be received.
