- -- - - ------ - --- - -- - MEETING September 20. 1937 <br />Regular meeting of the Board of Public Works was held on Monday, September 20, <br />1937, at 11:00 A. M. All members were -present. <br />Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. <br />Claims, from the following suppliers, in the amount of $266.51 were approved and <br />ordered paid. <br />Indiana Bell Telephone Co. $2.00 South Bend Wholesale Drug Co. $8.,00 <br />Indiana Bell Telephone Co. .30 .City Water Works 14.52- <br />Indiana Bell Telephone Co. 229.61 Gafill Oil Company 6.28 <br />• <br />Indiana Bell Telephone Co. 1.05 Days Transfer, Inc. .75 <br />Eugene Fischoff 4.00 <br />�Mr. H. G. Christman appeared before the Board with Mr. Welber, a representative <br />of the Robertson Brothers Company, and requested that permission be given to erect <br />a connecting passage -way across the alley between 211 South Michigan and 219 South <br />Michigan at the third floor level of these two -buildings, giving a clearance of <br />approximately twenty-six feet. After consulting with the Building Commissioner and <br />the Fire Chief, permission was given, subject to approval during and after construction <br />of Mr. Moomaw and William Freeh. <br />This being the date set for hearing of Improvement Resolution No. 2490, same <br />•. <br />being for the construction of a local sewer in Duey Avenue from South Bend Avenue to <br />the alley north of St. Vincent Street. The following interested persons were present: <br />Mrs. John Viorden <br />Mr. A. P. Perley, representing the LaSalle Building ,& Loan Association. <br />Mrs. Albert Bennett, who filed a remonstrance. <br />Mr. Bradburn, who is purchasing a location from Mrs. Worden. <br />There being small representation, the Board continued this hearing until Saturday <br />morning, September 25th, at 10:00 A. M. <br />The Indiana & Michigan Electric Company requested permission to install under- <br />ground ducts at the intersection of LaSalle Avenue and St. James Court, as per their <br />drawing 107-215. Upon recommendation of Mr. Qualls, this permission was granted and <br />the Indiana & Michigan Electric Company was so notified. <br />f The H. G. Christman Construction Company requested permission to install one <br />pair of sidewalk doors 41x4' in the sidewalk near the curb line at Worths, Inc., <br />127 North Michigan Street. After considering the matter, the Board decided to grant <br />this permission. The H. G. Christman Company was so notified. <br />/ A petition was presented to the Board, signed by ten private taxi owners, stating <br />they were in favor of keeping the taxi meters on the cabs as at present and also <br />maintaining the present rates and objecting in a change in the Taxi Cab Ordinance. <br />This matter was referred to the Traffic Committee of the Common Council without <br />recommendation. <br />Mr. George Rulison, representing the Blake Wall Paper Mills, and Mr. Aaron <br />Huguenard, representing the Chicago South Shore and South Bend Railroad, were present <br />and presented the following Resolution for approval of the Board: <br />WHEREAS, Blake Wallpaper Mills, Inc. has been conduct- <br />ing a business near the intersection of the line of Chicago <br />South Shore and South Bend Railroad and LaPorte Avenue in • <br />the -city of South Bend, Indiana, and is taking steps to <br />caus-e the expansion of said business by the addition of new <br />capital and as said business expands employment will be given <br />to more residents of the City of South Bend; and <br />WHEREAS, the proper development of said business <br />requires that its plant possess railroad facilities for the • <br />movement of freight: <br />THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of <br />Public Works of the City of South Bend, <br />Indiana, that said Chicago South Shore and <br />South Bend Railroad and John N. Shannahan <br />and Claude J. Jackson, as trustees of the <br />property thereof, be advised that the City <br />of South Bend has no objection to the hauling <br />of freight to and from said plant as the <br />needs thereof may require and that said City Is <br />has no objection to the construction of a <br />sidetrack at said plant for the more convenient <br />hauling of said freight; <br />
